The tournaments
Olympia 1996 in Atlanta
By reaching the World Cup quarter-finals in 1995, Germany qualified for the first Olympic women's football tournament. In the opening game against Japan , Bettina Wiegmann scored the first ever Olympic goal. In the end there was a difficult 3-2 victory. In the second game against Norway , the German team lost 3-2 and were therefore under pressure. In the last group game, they had to win against Brazil , but it was only a 1-1 draw. After the tournament, national coach Gero Bisanz resigned. Tina Theune-Meyer took over the post.
Olympia 2000 in Sydney
Berlin had also applied for the 2000 Games , but failed to vote in the second round. The German team then qualified as one of the three best European teams by reaching the quarter-finals at the 1999 World Cup .
The second Olympic tournament went a lot better than the first time. There were three wins to book after the preliminary round. At first they defeated the Australians 3-0. Then Brazil was defeated 2-1 and successfully retaliated. Birgit Prinz scored the first Olympic brace in this game. At the end there was a 1-0 win against Sweden . As group winners, the Theune Meyer Elf advanced to the semi-finals and met Norway there. Again the DFB-Elf was inferior to the Scandinavians. The decision was made by an unfortunate and curious own goal by Tina Wunderlich . In the small final, the German selection won 2-0 against Brazil and secured the bronze medal. It was the first Olympic medal for the DFB since 1988 .
Olympia 2004 in Athens
At the beginning of the third Olympic women's football tournament, the DFB-Elf caused a bang. The national team of China was swept away 8-0. Birgit Prinz scored four goals in this game alone. In the second group game, Mexico's selection was beaten 2-0 and Germany was the group winner. After a 2-1 win over Nigeria in the quarter-finals, the USA was waiting in the semifinals, defeating the German team 2-1 in extra time. In the small final, the German team defeated the Swedish team with a goal from Renate Lingor and the Theune Meyer team was able to look forward to the bronze medal for the second time.
2008 Olympics in Beijing
During the 2007 World Cup in China, the German team qualified for the Olympic Games. There was a "new edition" of the World Cup final against Brazil in the first group game . Both teams could not score a goal. In the second and third games of the preliminary round against Nigeria and North Korea they won 1-0, so that Germany could qualify for the quarter-finals as second in the group behind Brazil. There Germany met Sweden and won 2-0 after extra time. In the semi-finals, Germany lost a game against Brazil (1: 4) for the first time and played against Japan in the small final . The team defeated the Asians 2-0 with two goals from Fatmire Bajramaj , who came on only 10 minutes before her first goal, and thus finished third again.
Olympia 2012 in London
Due to the elimination in the quarter-finals of the 2011 World Cup against eventual world champions Japan, the German team missed the Olympic football tournament in London, as France and Sweden reached the semi-finals and thus received the two vacant European starting places.
Olympia 2016 in Rio de Janeiro
By reaching the quarter-finals at the 2015 World Cup , the German team secured one of the three European starting positions, as only England and France from Europe had reached the quarter-finals besides Germany . For the group draw, the German team was placed in pot 1 together with hosts Brazil and world champions USA. The two other European starters France and Sweden , which had secured third European starting place in a separate tournament , were placed in Pot 2 together with Australia . Since it was not possible to draw two teams from one confederation into one group, it was already clear before the draw that Germany would meet Australia. Canada and newcomer Zimbabwe, against whom Germany has never played before, were drawn as further opponents. Germany started against the newcomer to the Olympics 6: 2, then had to be content with a 2: 2 against Australia, which captain Saskia Bartusiak only secured in the 89th minute. Against Canada, against the 12 times previously obtained, Germany went through an early from Melanie Behringer transformed penalty lead but had against qualified already for the quarterfinals Canadians, without their record national and -torschützin Christine Sinclair and Janine Beckie competed , who had scored three goals in the first two games, still conceded two goals by Melissa Tancredi and thus lost to Canada for the first time. Since Australia, which also defeated Zimbabwe 6-1 in the parallel game, lost 2-0 to Canada against Canada, Germany finished second and met China in the quarter-finals. After a 1-0 win, the team took the opportunity to return the favor in the semi-finals for the group defeat against Canada to reach the final for the first time. In this, Germany prevailed 2-1 against Sweden and thus won the first gold medal in the history of German football.
Olympia 2020 in Tokyo
Due to the quarter-final defeat at the 2019 World Cup against Sweden, the German team missed the Olympic Games. In addition to Sweden, England and the Netherlands were able to qualify for the semi-finals and only the three best European teams from the World Cup were able to qualify for the Olympic Games. In contrast to 2015, British associations had previously agreed to send a joint team to Tokyo if England became one of the top three teams at the World Cup.
