The European Association awards the three places to the most successful European participants in the 2007 World Cup . Qualification for the Olympic Games was already achieved by making it to the quarter-finals.

Squad

On June 11, 2008, the national coach Silvia Neid nominated a provisional 25-man squad. 17 players from this line-up were part of the squad at the 2007 World Cup. The top scorer of the 2007/08 Bundesliga season, Inka Grings, was not part of the squad . According to Silvia Neid, Grings “ did not submit the necessary documents for a visa despite repeated requests from the DFB ”.

On June 17, 2008, Petra Wimbersky canceled her participation because of cartilage damage in her left knee joint . Anja Mittag was nominated for her . After the friendly against England on July 18, 2008, Silvia Neid finally nominated the 18-man squad. Isabell Bachor , Lena Goeßling , Navina Omilade , Bianca Rech , Alisa Vetterlein and Lisa Weiß were not nominated from the provisional list . Thus 16 world champions from 2007 will take part in the Olympic Games.

Preliminary round

  • August 6, 2008 in Shenyang : Germany 0-0 BrazilGermanyGermanyBrazilBrazil

At the beginning, Renate Lingor, Birgit Prinz and Kerstin Stegemann set a record. The trio took part in the Olympic Games for the fourth time. The German team played in the same formation as in the 2007 World Cup final .

The Brazilians had the first big chance in the game. In the 12th minute, Cristiane headed a cross from Marta over the gate. The first chance for the German team had Sandra Smisek, whose header hit the crossbar in the 24th minute. Until half-time, the German team had advantages and created more opportunities. Melanie Behringer's long-range shot was parried by Brazil's goalkeeper Andreai (37th) while Birgit Prinz missed the goal after dribbling (42nd).

In the second half, both teams increased the pace. Sandra Smisek just missed the goal with a lob (62nd). In the final phase of the game, physical advantages on the part of the South Americans were revealed. Marta had two more great chances in the closing stages, but failed both times because of the German goalkeeper Nadine Angerer. National coach Silvia Neid was satisfied with the result and praised the defensive work.

The German team played in the following line-up: Angerer - Stegemann, Krahn, Hingst, Bresonik - Lingor, Laudehr - Garefrekes, Prinz, Behringer (73rd Bajramaj) - Smisek (73rd Okoyino da Mbabi)

  • August 9, 2008 in Shenyang: Nigeria - Germany 0: 1 (0: 0)NigeriaNigeriaGermanyGermany

National coach Silvia Neid made no changes to the starting line-up. The game started in disarray and both teams were unable to create any significant chances to score. Due to the rough style of play of the African champions, there were many interruptions. Birgit Prinz had the first big chance in the 30th minute, but her shot from the edge of the penalty area went over the gate. The second half went goalless. Sarah Michaels had the best chance for Nigeria in the 55th minute. First she played the German defense and appeared alone in front of the German goal. Nadine Angerer was able to parry her shot and the margin from Nkwocha.

The German game was revived by replacing Sandra Smisek with Anja Mittag. In the 66th minute, noon prevailed on the left. Her flank reached the approaching Kerstin Stegemann, who placed the ball with her right in the goal. Then the spell was broken and the German team had numerous additional chances. However, no more goals were scored.

  • August 12, 2008 in Tianjin : North Korea - Germany 0: 1 (0: 0)Korea NorthNorth KoreaGermanyGermany

Again, the German team ran in the same formation. In the first few minutes of the game, the world champion had big problems with the fast, lively Koreans, who had the first chance after eleven minutes. The German team made a lot of bad passes and gave the opponent numerous counter opportunities. Simone Laudehr had the best chance for the DFB-Elf. After a free kick by Renate Lingor, Laudehr headed the ball to the crossbar.

In the second half, the German team began to play more powerfully, before the game increasingly flattened out. After 78 minutes, Kerstin Garefrekes headed a Lingor free kick just over the goal. The decision came three minutes before the final whistle. Birgit Prinz prevailed over the left side and shot at the goal. Goalkeeper Jon could only splash the ball off. Anja Mittag took advantage of the situation and pushed the ball into the empty goal.

The German team set a new Olympic record. The team has been clean for 381 minutes and improved the old record by 52 minutes.

Over long distances, the German team had clear advantages, but the opportunities they had won were not used. A long-range shot from noon only just missed the goal (6th) while Bresonik hit the outside post a short time later (8th). Birgit Prinz had the best chance in the first round when she walked onto the goal alone, rounded goalkeeper Lindahl, but then didn't hit the empty goal (33rd). Sweden got stronger in the second half and had a good opportunity through Svensson , which was defused by Nadine Angerer. Shortly before the final whistle, Melanie Behringer could have made everything clear, but her shot from the edge of the penalty area only hit the crossbar.

In the 18th minute, Anja Mittag had a good opportunity to extend the lead. However, it failed because of the Brazilian goalkeeper. Then the vice world champion became stronger. Shortly before half-time, Formiga scored to equalize. Brazil took the lead in the 50th minute. 3rd place match

  • August 21, 2008 in Beijing : Germany - Japan 2-0 (0-0)GermanyGermanyJapanJapan

Before the small final, Sandra Smisek took the place of Anja Mittag on the starting grid. The Japanese got off to a better start and had several good scoring opportunities between the 14th and 24th minute, but failed again and again against the German goalkeeper Nadine Angerer. The German team played without ideas and mostly only got to the penalty area. Even the substitution of Conny Pohlers in the second half did not bring any additional impetus on the offensive.

The lucky opening goal for the world champion fell in the 69th minute. Furumoto could only clap a header from Kerstin Garefrekes. Substitute Fatmire Bajramaj met from an acute angle to 1-0. The leadership brought more security into the German game. Three minutes before the final whistle, Bajramaj increased the score to 2-0 and secured their team the third bronze medal in a row.
