The German selection qualified for the World Cup via the 1991 European Championship. Separate qualifying matches for World Cups were not scheduled by UEFA until the 1999 Women's World Cup .

Preliminary round

In the first half, the German team set the course for their first win in their first World Cup game. Silvia Neid put the German team in the lead after 17 minutes. A double strike from Heidi Mohr (32nd, 35th) brought the preliminary decision. In the second half, Gudrun Gottschlich (57th) made the final score. It was the German national team's first game against an African selection.

Bettina Wiegmann scored the opening goal after eleven minutes. Heidi Mohr expanded her goal account with hits in the 22nd and 50th minute. It was the first international match against Taiwan and the German eleven were selected as the quarter-finalists.

It was only in the second half that the goals that brought the German team to win the group fell. Heidi Mohr (67th) and Britta Unsleber (80th) were successful. The German team remained clean in the preliminary round.

Quarter finals

Once again, 20-year-old Bettina Wiegmann brought the German team into the lead. With a penalty she scored her second tournament goal after 18 minutes. Mackensie equalized after 26 minutes with a penalty kick. No further goals were scored, so that for the first time a World Cup match had to be extended. Here it was Heidi Mohr again who scored the goal of the semi-finals after 98 minutes.

The US turned out to be a size too big. Jennings brought the US girls to victory with three hits (9th, 21st, 32nd). In return, Heidi Mohr scored the next goal (33rd). In the second half Heinrichs (52nd, 74th) increased to 4: 1 and 5: 2. The second German goal came from Bettina Wiegmann (74th). Doris Fitschen saw the first yellow card from a German player at a World Cup.
