This article covers the German women's national team at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens .

qualification

The UEFA were three places available. Greece took one place as host. For the Greeks it was the only participation in a major international tournament so far. The other two places went to the two best-placed European teams in the 2003 Women's World Cup . The World Cup finalists Germany and Sweden thus qualified for the Olympic Games.

Preliminary round

The German team was able to win the opening game surprisingly high. Birgit Prinz ensured a calming half-time lead with two goals. In the last 25 minutes, the German team struck six more times. Prinz increased her goal account to four goals. In addition, Pia Wunderlich, Renate Lingor (penalty), Conny Pohlers and Martina Müller met. The 8: 0 is the highest victory in an Olympic women's soccer game to date. 4,000 spectators saw the game in Patras.

With three changes, the German team went into the second game. Sarah Günther took up defense for Sonja Fuss. Navina Omilade came into midfield for Pia Wunderlich. Isabel Bachor also joined the team as the third striker. But Viola Odebrecht stayed on the bench. The Mexicans defied the Chinese with a respectable 1: 1. The German team won 2-0 with goals from Wimbersky and Prinz and secured group victory. The game in Athens saw 10,000 spectators.

Steffi Jones equalized in the 66th minute. Substitute Conny Pohlers scored the winning goal nine minutes before the end. 5,000 spectators saw the game in Patras.

In a dramatic final phase, Isabel Bachor managed to equalize in the last minute. The winning goal for the USA fell in the 99th minute by OReilley. 5,165 spectators saw the game in Heraklion.
