In the preliminary round, the German team met Argentina , England and Japan . This was the result of the draw on April 22, 2007. The game against Argentina on September 10, 2007 was the opening game of the tournament.
Preliminary round
Germany - Argentina 11: 0 (5: 0)
(September 10, 2007 in Shanghai , Shanghai Hongkou Football Stadium , 28,098 spectators)
The defending champion started the world championship with the first double-digit and thus the highest victory in World Cup history. After twelve minutes, the German team took the lead. The Argentine goalkeeper Correa boxed a corner from Behringer into her own goal. After 17 minutes, Garefrekes increased to 2-0 after a 50-meter free kick by Stegemann. Behringer (24th) and two goals from Prinz (29th and 45th) ensured the half-time score of 5: 0. In the second half, the completely overwhelmed Argentines were overrun. Lingor filled the half dozen with a lob in the 51st minute . A double strike from Smisek (57th) and Prinz (59th, with a header) increased the result. In the 70th minute, Smisek scored the 9-0 with a shot from twelve meters into the corner, breaking the previous goal record. The tenth goal was again scored by Smisek (79th). The final score was again achieved by the Argentine goalkeeper with her second own goal after a Lingor corner. The own goals were assessed retrospectively for the German players by FIFA. So Behringer officially scored the first goal, Lingor the last goal.
In addition to the three-time goal scorers Prinz and Smisek, the wing tongs with Behringer and Garefrekes stood out. Birgit Prinz overtook Bettina Wiegmann as the best German World Cup scorer with her goals . In the all-time World Cup scorers list , Prinz caught up with Michelle Akers ( USA ) with twelve goals . Silvia Neid was satisfied after the game and praised the good exploitation of chances. Birgit Prinz criticized the many mistakes that were made after the game. “After the opening game, we still don't really know where we stand.” The live broadcast on ZDF saw an average of 2.5 million people, which corresponded to a market share of around 21 percent.
Germany played in the following line-up: Angerer - Stegemann, Minnert, Hingst, Bresonik - Garefrekes (84th midday), Laudehr (75th Bartusiak), Lingor, Behringer (68th Wimbersky) - Smisek, Prinz.
(September 14, 2007 in Shanghai, Shanghai Hongkou Football Stadium, 27,730 spectators)
Silvia Neid had to change her starting line-up slightly. Sandra Minnert suffered a thigh strain during training . That's why Annike Krahn from Duisburg joined the team. The grass was softened by heavy rains, which benefited the strong English women. After six minutes, Krahn had the first chance to score. A long-range shot by Linda Bresonik (18th) was the only other chance to score in a weak first half. Both teams made too many playback errors, so that there were hardly any further highlights worth mentioning in the first half. Shortly before half-time, England goalkeeper Rachel Brown had to intervene twice after a header from Kerstin Garefrekes and the follow-up shot from Birgit Prinz. In the second section, the German team played largely without any concept or ideas, while the English were waiting for the counterattack. Both Birgit Prinz and Sandra Smisek only got a few chances. In the 82nd minute, Garefrekes had the best chance for the opening goal. However, her shot was cleared by Brown with a foot defense. Simone Laudehr saw her second yellow card and had to watch the game against Japan . The national coach praised the good defensive performance after the game, but criticized the many careless mistakes in the game forward.
Germany played in the following line-up: Angerer - Stegemann, Krahn, Hingst, Bresonik - Garefrekes, Laudehr, Lingor, Behringer (63rd Bajramaj) - Smisek, Prinz.
(September 17, 2007, Hangzhou , Hangzhou Dragon Stadium , 39,817 spectators)
Due to Simone Laudehr's yellow card suspension, Silvia Neid had to change her team again. Originally Saskia Bartusiak was supposed to join the defense, but Linda Bresonik was supposed to take over the part of Laudehr in the defensive midfield. Finally, envy left Bresonik in defense. But Petra Wimbersky played in the right midfield and Kerstin Garefrekes moved into the middle.
Wimbersky had the first chance after just four minutes, but failed because of the strong goalkeeper Fukumoto. A short time later, Garefrekes failed with a big chance. The Japanese were able to free themselves from the German embrace with a few relief attacks. After 21 minutes, the German team took the lead. After a Lingor corner, Birgit Prinz made it 1-0 with a left-footed shot. With her 13th World Cup goal, Prinz is now the most successful goalscorer at World Championships and overtaken the American Michelle Akers . The German team had more chances, but could not increase the lead. In the second half, the Germans shifted down a gear and had few chances. However, the Japanese could not take advantage of the German reluctance, so that the majority of the second round remained without any significant highlights. The Envy-Elf came late to further chances, but neither Bajramaj, Wimbersky or Prinz could convert them into goals. Substitute Martina Müller was brought down in the penalty area three minutes before the final whistle . Renate Lingor converted the penalty to make it 2-0. The German team was able to qualify as group winners for the quarter-finals with this victory, while the Japanese had to travel home.

Quarter finals
Germany - North Korea 3: 0 (1: 0)
(September 22, 2007, Wuhan , Wuhan Sports Center Stadium , 37,200 spectators)
Simone Laudehr returned to the team after her yellow card suspension. For this, Petra Wimbersky had to vacate her place. The use of Linda Bresonik and Sandra Smisek was initially on the brink due to adductor problems. The recovered Sandra Minnert initially stayed on the bench.
A close game developed in the first half with chances on both sides. The German team played from a safe defense, but found it difficult with the closely staggered North Korean defense. North Korea, on the other hand, played a few opportunities through a quick short passing game. In the 12th minute, Angerer blocked a shot by Ri Un Gyong with his foot. Linda Bresonik wanted to clarify and met Kim Yong Ae. Fortunately, the ball missed the post. Towards the end of the first half, the DFB-Elf came into play better. But Smisek with a diving header (34th) and Prinz with a header (39th) could not score a goal. In the 44th minute Garefrekes was played, prevailed against three opponents and flicked the ball into the goal with her weaker left foot. In the second half, the North Koreans pushed for the German goal with all their might, but the German defense withstood the attacks. After 68 minutes Renate Lingor scored the 2-0 after a one-two with Sandra Smisek from the left position. Four minutes later, Annike Krahn ensured the final score with her first international goal.
As the first team in World Cup history, the German team reached the semi-finals without conceding a goal. Goalkeeper Nadine Angerer was voted player of the game and praised the team's good cooperation after the game. After the game, the contract with the national coach Silvia Neid was extended to 2011. Renate Lingor's hit was voted “Goal of the Week” by the viewers of the sports show .

Semifinals
(September 26, 2007, Tianjin , Tianjin Olympic Center Stadium , 53,819 spectators)
With a clear 3-0 victory, the German national team moved into the final of the soccer world championship for the third time after 1995 and 2003. Compared to the quarter-finals, Silvia Neid made no change in the starting line-up.
Sandra Smisek had two top-class chances within the first quarter of an hour. Then the Norwegians put pressure on, but neither Larsen Kaurin , Stensland nor Solveig Gulbrandsen could overcome Nadine Angerer in the German goal. In the 27th minute, the German team broke the record held by China for the longest time without conceding a goal (442 minutes). Shortly before the break, Melanie Behringer was injured. For them, Fatmire Bajramaj came into play, who was able to stage Prinz, whose flank was unhappily headed into her own goal by Trine Rønning . At the beginning of the second half, the DFB selection increased the pressure and created numerous goal opportunities. Norway only got a chance through Klaveness. In direct return, Prince penetrated the penalty area and put on Stegemann. Her shot was deflected, flew in a high arc over Norway's goalkeeper Bente Nordby and bounced off the inside post into the goal. Three minutes later, substitute Martina Müller grabbed a failed back pass from Siri Nordby and scored the 3-0 final score. Bajramaj could have raised in the 78th minute, but her shot hit the crossbar.
The live broadcast of the game was followed by an average of 3.7 million viewers in Germany, which corresponds to a market share of 32.3 percent.

final
(September 30, 2007, Shanghai, Shanghai Hongkou Football Stadium, 31,000 spectators)
The German women's national team wrote football history with their final victory. For the first time, the reigning world champion managed to defend their title and the German team was the first team to remain without a goal in the course of the tournament. Birgit Prinz also set a new record with her third participation in the finals.
Silvia Neid sent her team unchanged into the final. After just five minutes, Kerstin Garefrekes had the first opportunity. Her shot from a half-right position only hit the side netting. Three minutes later, there was great confusion in the German penalty area after a free kick by the Brazilians, which they only survived unscathed with luck. The best chance for the Germans had after a quarter of an hour Sandra Smisek, who passed the gate from 14 meters after a combination over Simone Laudehr and Birgit Prinz. In the middle of the first half, the South Americans had field advantages. A shot by Daniela hit the post in the 24th minute, her subsequent header went over the goal. A minute later, Annike Krahn and Nadine Angerer clarified in dire need after Marta had already overflowed Ariane Hingst. A stick mistake by Melanie Behringer, who appeared free in front of Andréia after a cross from Kerstin Garefrakes, thwarted a good opportunity. The German defense was more secure, but the attack could not create any further opportunities. So it went goalless into the half-time break. After the restart, the German team took the initiative again. In the 52nd minute, Sandra Smisek left her opponent standing in the penalty area with a clever turn and passed Birgit Prinz, who took the lead with her fifth goal. Brazil now put more pressure on. After a corner, Annike Krahn's header barely missed the goal. After 64 minutes, Brazilian Cristiane was fouled by Linda Bresonik in the penalty area. However, Nadine Angerer was able to fend off Marta's penalty. Shortly afterwards, Angerer fisted a dangerous free kick from Daniela from the corner. The Brazilians were unable to score the following attacks because the German defense was secure. The decision was made four minutes before the end: After a corner from Renate Lingor, Simone Laudehr scored the 2-0 with a header, which was voted goal of the month for September by the spectators of the sports show .
DFB President Theo Zwanziger spoke of a “great hour for German football” after the game. The ZDF live broadcast was followed by an average of 9 million viewers, with a peak of up to 11.5 million. The market share was 50.5 percent.
Germany played in the following line-up: Angerer - Stegemann, Hingst, Krahn, Bresonik - Garefrekes, Laudehr, Lingor, Behringer (74th Müller) - Prinz, Smisek (80th Bajramaj)
