from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bente Nordby (born July 23, 1974 ) is a former Norwegian soccer player. The goalkeeper played for the Swedish club Djurgårdens IF / Älvsjö in the Damallsvenskan and in the Norwegian national team . Nordby was one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

Career

Nordby began her career at Sprint / Jeløy (now FK Athene Moss). At the age of 17, she made her debut in the Norwegian national team in 1991, with which she became European champion two years later . In the same year she celebrated the first Norwegian championship with her club. 1995 Nordby became world champion with the Norwegian selection after a 2-0 win over Germany . Nordby took part in the Olympic Games twice with the Norwegian national team. In 1996 in Atlanta she won bronze, in 2000 in Sydney even the gold medal.

After the Olympic Games in Sydney, Nordby moved to the US professional league WUSA , where she played for Carolina Courage and San Diego Spirit. After WUSA went bankrupt, she returned to Norway and joined Kolbotn IL . With Kolbotn she celebrated two more championship titles before moving to Asker FK in 2004 . After the forced relegation of Asker FK, Nordby moved to the Stockholm club Djurgårdens IF / Älvsjö . In January 2007, she announced that she would end her career at the end of the year. She made her last international match on October 27, 2007 in a 3-0 win against Russia. With 172 internationals she was the European goalkeeper with the most internationals until June 14, 2014, then she was outbid by the Scottish Gemma Fay , who was replaced in 2016 by the American Hope Solo .

In April 2007 she was nominated for the game of the “FIFA Women's World Stars” against the Chinese women's national soccer team on the occasion of the group draw for the 2007 World Cup and was in goal in the first half.

Contrary to the original intention, she moved to Olympique Lyon in France for a half season in early 2008 , where she replaced the injured goalkeeper. This "substitute period" then extended until the end of the 2008/09 season. So she came to several appearances in the European championship competition and two French championship titles.

Nordby has been nominated for World Player of the Year four times, but each time it came up empty handed. Her strengths were lightning-fast reflexes on the goal line. She only showed weaknesses in the control of the penalty area.
