Career

Solo wears the number 78 at a 2009 All-Star Game in honor of her father, who died at the age of 78

Solo attended Richland High School in Washington and the University of Washington . During her time in high school, she played as a striker and only joined the University of Washington team in 1999 as a goalkeeper.

In 2004 Solo was named as the 3rd goalkeeper for the Olympic Games , but was not used.

In 2007 Solo took part in the 2007 World Cup in China and only allowed two goals to reach the semi-finals. Before the World Cup semi-final against Brazil , Solo was relegated to the bench by coach Greg Ryan in favor of Briana Scurry . After the 4-0 defeat, Solo accused the coach in an interview of having made a mistake with the move, and that she herself could have prevented the goal. Although Solo apologized a little later for her remarks, she was not used in the game for third place, nor did she travel home with the team. Solo was only called back to the US national team when Pia Sundhage changed coach in early 2008. Now she was able to take part in the 2008 Olympic Games with Team USA and won the gold medal here.

In 2009 Solo suffered a serious shoulder injury but continued to play in pain. She was operated on in September 2010. In time for the 2011 World Cup in Germany , she recovered. She played the three group games in the tournament , the quarter-finals and reached the semi-finals against France with her team . In the decisive penalty shootout of the quarter-finals against Brazil, she held the third Brazilian penalty shot by Daiane , who had already scored an own goal in the second minute. She had already saved a penalty in the game, but it had to be repeated because, in the opinion of the referee, a teammate had run into the penalty area too early. During the repetition by Marta she was powerless, also at the interim 1: 2 by Marta.

On July 13, 2011 Solo made her 100th international match in the semi-finals in a 3-1 win against France as the tenth goalkeeper . She reached the final with her team, where they met Japan on July 17th . After it was 2-2 after extra time, the penalty shoot-out had to decide like against Brazil. This time, however, three of their teammates could not convert their penalty, while Solo could only save one of the four penalties of the Japanese players. The penalty shoot-out was lost 3-1.

In 2011 she was the solo goalkeeper of the now dissolved magicJack in Boca Raton .

On September 22, 2011 Solo was honored in the game against Canada for their 100th international match, as this was not possible during the World Cup, and on this occasion led the team as captain on the field. In the same year she took part in the 13th season of Dancing with the Stars .

Solo finished the 2014 season with Seattle Reign FC in first place and then reached the final in the NWSL Championship Play-offs, but lost it with her team against FC Kansas City . This was to be repeated in the following 2015 season , with her national team rival Nicole Barnhart in the goal of Kansas City in both finals .

On January 21, 2015, Solo was suspended for 30 days during a training camp for the national team due to a training incident, so that she could not participate in the following friendly matches on February 8 against France and February 13 against England. For the Algarve Cup 2015 she was nominated again and won the title with her team, with Solo being used in all four games and not conceding a goal three times. In the final against France she was player of the game.

Despite her personal problems, Solo was appointed to the squad for the 2015 World Cup . On June 22nd, she replaced Briana Scurry as the US record goalkeeper in the round of 16 against Colombia with her 174th international match . On July 5, 2015, she became the soccer world champion when the USA defeated defending champions Japan 5-2 in the final.

The International Olympic Committee described Solo's outbreak as disappointing , but will not take formal disciplinary action initiate against them. However, the US association found their statements "unacceptable" and banned them for six months. Swedish team coach Pia Sundhage said of the incident: .. I don't give a damn. I'm going to Rio, she's going home. After the ban by the US federation, she has not yet been nominated for the national team again. (As of March 2020)
