Nicole Renee Barnhart (born October 10, 1981 in Pottstown , Pennsylvania ) is an American football goalkeeper . She plays for Utah Royals FC and for the US national team .
life and career
Barnhart grew up in Gilbertsville , Pennsylvania and played for the Stanford University college team , the Stanford Cardinal . She was named the "All Pacific Ten Conference Player" in 2002, 2003 and 2004 and holds the Stanford women's record for the lowest conceded rate (0.41). From 2009 to 2010 she played for FC Gold Pride in the WPS . The club dominated the league and won the subsequent playoff final for the championship 4-0 against Philadelphia Independence. Due to financial problems, the club was dissolved in November 2010 and Banhart switched to playoff opponents.
She came to her first international match on October 16, 2004 because the actual goalkeeper Briana Scurry had another obligation. Since Barnhart had played for the Cardinals the day before and should play for them again the next day in the Bay Area , she was only on the bench in Kansas City for emergencies. When striker Angela Hucles , who scored the 1-0, was injured in the 81st minute of the game against Mexico , Barnhart had to be substituted on as a striker in the 86th minute, as all field players who were available as substitutes had already been substituted. had been substituted.
At the 2007 World Cup in China and the Olympic Games in Beijing , where the USA won the gold medal for the third time, she only took part as the third goalkeeper and was not used. But she played a major role in qualifying for the Olympic Games when she was able to save a penalty in the qualifying game against Canada , which was decided in a penalty shoot-out.
Her first tournament as a regular goalkeeper - due to a shoulder operation by Hope Solo - was the 2010 CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup , where the US team surprisingly only finished third. She was also in goal in the two playoff games against Italy that were necessary .
In 2011 it was used in the first eight out of ten games. a. at all games of the Algarve Cup , which the Americans won for the eighth time in March. Barnhart was part of the US squad for the 2011 World Cup in Germany . Since Solo was back in goal in the last two test matches before the World Cup, it was initially open who would keep the goal at the World Cup. Barnhart, like the third goalkeeper, was not used because Solo was in goal at all World Cup games. She was also only a substitute goalkeeper at the 2012 Olympic Games .
Since the 2013 season, she has played in the newly founded National Women's Soccer League , the highest American professional league in women's football, initially five seasons for FC Kansas City and since 2018 for Utah Royals FC . With Kansas, she won the championship in 2014 and 2015 . Her national team competitor Hope Solo was in the opposing goal in both finals .
