The FC Gold Pride was an American women's football - Franchise in Santa Clara, California . The first team entered the seasons 2009 and 2010 in the Women's Professional Soccer on. The club was the successor to the San Jose CyberRays , which played in the Women's United Soccer Association .
history
The FC Gold Pride was founded on September 3rd, 2008. The franchise was the last team to be selected for the new Women's Professional Soccer League. The crew is owned by Brian and Nancy NeSmith. Brian NeSmith is the former CEO of Blue Coat Systems, an IT company based in Sunnyvale, California . The first coach was former MLS professional Albertin Montoya, who was previously active for the San Jose Clash . Former Brazilian international Sissi became Gold Pride's first assistant coach.
The first game of the season in the WPS took place on April 5, 2009 against the Boston Breakers . Gold Pride won 2-1 and was very strong. The team could not win the following games so consistently and fell to the lower ranks. The entry into the play-offs was missed and the first season was finished in seventh place.
In January 2010 the FC Gold Pride succeeded in taking over several players from the dissolved Los Angeles Sol, among them Marta Vieira da Silva, the world footballer of the last 4 years . With his new team he dominated the league and at the end of the season had a 17-point lead over the second-placed team. The subsequent playoff final for the championship won the FC Gold Pride 4-0 against Philadelphia Independence.
Despite this successful season, the club was dissolved in November 2010 due to financial problems.
Stadion
In the 2009 season, the team still played at Buck Shaw Stadium. In the 2010 season, the home games were played at the Pioneer Stadium. The stadium is located on the grounds of California State University, East Bay in Hayward, California .
