Central Arizona Project

The Central Arizona Project ( CAP ) is the design and construction of a 541 km long water channel , the longest and most expensive in the history of the United States , in the US state of Arizona . Water is taken from the Colorado River at the Lake Havasu reservoir and fed into the middle ( Phoenix ) and south ( Tucson ) of Arizona.

The construction of the CAP goes back to the Colorado River Basin Project Act , which was signed by then US President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 . It started in 1973 and construction was declared completed in 1994. The then politicians from Arizona, Senator Carl Hayden , Senator Barry Goldwater and the brothers Mo Udall and Stewart Lee Udall played a special role in the implementation of the project . They all named the project one of the most important endeavors in the state and in the history of Arizona and their careers.
