The Arizona Canal is a major irrigation canal in central Maricopa County in the US state of Arizona .

Its water is taken from the Salt River at the Granite Reef weir near Scottsdale . At Phoenix , Cave Creek flows into the canal. He then flows through Glendale and ends in Peoria in Skunk Creek , which over the New River in the Agua Fria River is flowing. The canal has a total length of 75 km. It is used for irrigation by flooding the property by the hour.

Construction of the canal began in 1885 by William J. Murphy. He founded Glendale. In the city center is Murphy Park, named after him. Nearby Peoria was also established in that decade. The canal led to the establishment of additional parishes in the late 1880s that are now among the richer neighborhoods of suburban Phoenix . Flood irrigation of adjacent gardens is still common here, using a system of side branches connected to the actual canal by gates. Like many Valley Canals, its banks are popular with joggers and cyclists.

The canal, which is nearly 80 km long, is the northernmost canal within the 211 km long Salt River Project water distribution system. The canal begins at Granite Reef Dam , northeast of Mesa , then flows west over the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community , into downtown Scottsdale , Phoenix 'Arcadia and Sunnyslope neighborhoods, Glendale , and Peoria , before joining New River in the Near the Arrowhead Towne Center ends.

William J. Murphy was enlisted in 1883 to spearhead the construction of the canal, which was completed in May 1885.

In 1888, a former Civil War chaplain named Major Winfield Scott acquired 2.6 km² of land on the south side of the Canal a few miles upstream (east) and laid the foundations for what is now Scottsdale. Murphy later built the Ingleside Club Hotel near Scottsdale (what is now Arcadia), establishing the vital tourism industry . Various resorts - The Phoenician, Biltmore , Royal Palms, a Pointe Hilton and a Ritz-Carlton - were all built in close proximity to the canal between 1929 and 1988. Furthermore, five shopping malls of different sizes and abundance were built: Borgata, Scottsdale Fashion Square , Biltmore Fashion Park , Metrocenter Mall and Arrowhead Towne Center, all along the canal. The canal was lengthened five miles at the western end of 1894, so it is now 47 miles (76 km) long.

A restored 750 kilowatt hydroelectric system and art display was inaugurated in Arcadia in June 2003 , on a 6.2 m natural drop called Arizona Falls .

The Scottsdale Waterfront Project aims to revitalize the area along the Arizon Canal just west of Scottsdale Road. The City of Scottsdale and the Scottsdale Public Art board hired architect Paolo Soleri to design a bridge over the Arizona Canal in downtown Scottsdale. The suspension bridge has two steel-armored 64-foot pylons that cast a beam of light onto the walkway to highlight solar events. The bridge will guide pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders north and south along the Arizona Canal System.
