The Granite Reef weir ( English Granite Reef Diversion Dam ) is a weir in Maricopa County , State of Arizona , USA . It dams the Salt River and is used to divert water into the Arizona and South Canal . The weir is about 6.4 km (4  miles ) below the confluence of the Salt and Verde Rivers ; Greater Phoenix is located approximately 35 km (22 miles) west of the weir.

The weir is owned and operated by the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR).

history

In April 1905, the Arizona Dam , a forerunner of today's weir, was damaged by floods. As a result, the Granite Reef weir was planned as a joint weir for the Arizona Canal on the northern side and the South Canal on the southern side . The construction of the weir began in October 1906. It was completed in May 1908.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete dam wall with a height of 8.8 m (29  ft ) above the foundation base . The top of the wall is at an altitude of 399 m (1310 ft) above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 344 m (1128 ft). The volume of the structure is 26,759 m³ (35,000  cubic yards ).
