Marta , with full name Marta Vieira da Silva (born February 19, 1986 in Dois Riachos ), is a Brazilian soccer player who has also had Swedish citizenship since 2017 . She is a regular attacker in the Brazilian national team . Marta was FIFA World Player of the Year six times between 2006 and 2018 and is considered by many experts to be the best female footballer in the world. Since April 2017 it stands at NWSL - Franchise Orlando Pride under contract.
Career
Club soccer
At the age of 14, Marta left her hometown Dois Riachos against the will of the family to pursue a football career. She started her career in Rio de Janeiro with CR Vasco da Gama and later played for São Martins. In 2004 Marta moved to the Swedish football club Umeå IK at the age of 18 . Marta immediately played a part in Umeås' UEFA Cup win when she scored a total of three goals in the final against 1. FFC Frankfurt . In the Swedish championship, Marta and her teammate Laura Kalmari were top scorer with 22 goals and Umeå finished the season in second place behind Djurgården .
In the following season Marta contributed with 21 goals this season to Umeå 2005 superior Swedish champions. Together with Therese Lundin , she was able to win the top scorer's crown again. Umeå defended the 2006 championship title undefeated with 21 wins and one draw. After the season, Marta extended her contract in Umeå, although she had a financially much more lucrative offer from league rivals Linköpings FC . In 2007 Marta reached the UEFA Cup final with Umeå for the second time, but it was lost to Arsenal . Umeå also won the Swedish Cup after three goals from Marta in the final and won the championship for the third time in a row.
Since Marta's move to Sweden, Umeå IK has been the league's crowd puller. The association put their market value for the city of Umeå at eight million US dollars a year. After the 2007 World Cup , the club started a campaign under the motto “Save Marta for Umeå!” In the hope of winning wealthy sponsors in order to fend off possible attempts to poach international clubs. She finally extended her contract with Umeå for another year, but left her plans open beyond that.
Umeå reached the UEFA Cup final again in 2008 and met 1. FFC Frankfurt there. The first leg, in which Marta scored the fastest goal in European history eleven seconds after kick-off, ended in a 1-1 draw. Umeå lost 3-2 in the second leg and thus failed in the final as in the previous year. Umeå won the Swedish championship for the fourth time in a row in 2008 and Marta and Manon Melis were top scorer of the league with 23 goals.
Marta has repeatedly expressed her interest in playing in the newly founded women's professional soccer league in the USA. In the course of the draft , the rights to enter into negotiations with her went to the Los Angeles Sol association . After several months of speculation, Marta announced in January 2009 that she would move to the USA and have signed a three-year contract in Los Angeles. With Los Angeles Sol she was runner-up in 2009 and won the Golden Boot (top scorer of the league).
During the summer break, she also played three months on loan for Santos FC in Brazil, with whom she won both the Copa Libertadores Femenina and the Copa do Brasil (Brazilian championship) and scored goals in both finals.
After Los Angeles Sol was dissolved in January 2010, Marta played in the 2010 season for FC Gold Pride . With this she won the championship and was the league's top scorer for the second time. After the season, the loan deal with FC Santos was repeated. Since FC Gold Pride was dissolved in November 2010 due to financial problems, Marta was initially without a club at the end of 2010. In the 2011 season she played for Western New York Flash and won the WPS championship again. After the US professional league canceled the 2012 season, Marta moved to the Swedish club Tyresö FF . With Tyresö she won the Damallsvenskan in 2012 and reached the final of the UEFA Women's Champions League in 2014 , but lost there to defending champion VfL Wolfsburg . After Tyresö went bankrupt, Marta moved to league rivals FC Rosengård .
For the 2017 NWSL season , Marta returned to the United States and joined Orlando Pride . At the beginning of October 2018, the club announced that they had drawn a contract option to extend the contract by one year until the end of the 2019 season.
National team
Marta first attracted international attention in 2002 when the then 16-year-old helped Brazil to a surprising fourth place with six goals at the U-19 World Cup in Canada . In 2003 she took part in the South American Championship in Peru for the Brazilian national team and had four goals in Brazil's successful title defense. At the 2003 World Cup in the USA, Marta scored three goals; Brazil reached the quarter-finals, in which they were eliminated against the eventual finalists Sweden .
While Marta was previously mainly considered a young talent, she became a great discovery and star of the Seleção during the 2004 Olympic soccer tournament in Athens. Brazil failed only in the final against the USA and celebrated the greatest international success to date with the Olympic silver medal. In the same year Marta also attended the U-19 World Cup in Thailand in part, reaching there with Brazil in fourth place. She scored a total of three goals and was voted the best player of the tournament.
Marta did not take part in the South American Championship in 2006 , in which Brazil, which only came with a weakened team, finished second after Argentina for the first time after four titles in a row . The year 2007 began very successfully for Marta when she won the gold medal at the Pan American Games in front of a home crowd in Brazil and scored a total of 12 goals in the tournament. The Seleção defeated the US U-20s in the final in front of 68,000 spectators in the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. By winning this title, Marta increased her popularity, especially in Brazil, and received special praise for her performance from football legend Pelé .
With the 2007 World Cup in China , Marta was able to significantly increase her global awareness. Especially her performance in the semi-final game against the USA and her spectacular goal to make it 4-0 attracted international attention. Marta was elected top scorer and best player of the tournament with seven goals; Brazil reached the women's World Cup final for the first time and finished the tournament as runners-up. However, Marta became the tragic figure of the final when she missed a penalty that would have equalized 1-1 against Germany .
At the Olympic soccer tournament in Beijing in 2008 Marta won the silver medal again with Brazil; during the tournament she scored three goals. As in 2004, the Seleção failed in the final against the USA. Previously, Brazil had defeated reigning world champions Germany in the semi-finals and thus won a game against the German team for the first time.
At the 2011 World Cup , she scored four goals in four games, drawing level with Birgit Prinz on the list of top scorers with 14 goals . She scored two of them in the quarter-finals against the USA, which Brazil lost on penalties after a last-minute goal to 2-2 in extra time by Abby Wambach .
At the Olympic football tournament in London in 2012 they could not build on their previous successes. Although they won the first game against Cameroon 5-0, to which they contributed two goals, after a 1-0 against New Zealand they lost 0-1 to the hosts and 2-0 in the quarter-finals against world champions Japan .
At the South American Championship in 2014 , when the Brazilians won again the title and qualified for the World Cup in 2015, they did not participate.
At the 2015 World Cup , Marta was the captain of her team and already scored another goal in Brazil's first game and became the sole most successful goalscorer at World Cups with 15 goals. Brazil also won the following two group games, but without any further goals from Marta. In the last sixteen against Australia , Marta and her team disappointed, lost 1-0 and eliminated.
At the 2016 Olympics in their home country, the team could not meet expectations and only finished fourth. Marta was used in the six games, but only came on as a substitute in the goalless draw against South Africa in the third group game. In the group game against Sweden she contributed two goals to the 5-1 win, but in the semifinals they lost on penalties against the Swedes.
At the 2018 South American Championship , where the Brazilians won the title again and qualified for the 2019 World Cup, they scored a goal in a 4-0 win over Venezuela .
At the 2019 World Cup , it was only used in the second group game against Australia. She was able to bring her team 1-0 lead with a converted penalty kick and thus, with her 16th World Cup goal, draw level with the men's record goal scorer Miroslav Klose in the second half, in which her team then lost the game but changed them. In the third group game against Italy she scored her 17th World Cup goal again with a penalty, which her team won the game, but only reached the second round as the best third party in the group. Here they were defeated by World Cup hosts France 2-1 after extra time.

Honors
Marta has been elected among the top three players eleven times in a row since 2004 when it was voted FIFA World Player of the Year . In the voting among the coaches and captains of the national teams of the world in 2004 and 2005, she first came third and second, in the following five years she was able to win the election of world footballer; in 2006 she relegated the American Kristine Lilly to second place, in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 she prevailed by a large margin against second-placed Birgit Prinz . In 2011 she was second behind the world champion Homare Sawa . In 2018 she won the award again for the sixth time.
After winning the final of the Pan American Games in 2007, Marta was given the honor of being the first and so far only woman to be able to immortalize her footprints in concrete in the Hall of Fame of the Estádio do Maracanã, alongside other greats of Brazilian football .
In 2016 she was one of the eight people who carried the Olympic flag to the Maracanã Stadium together during the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games .
Style of play
Marta enjoyed great freedom in the Umeå IK game system . While she was nominally a striker , she often dropped back into the offensive midfield in the course of a game , switched sides or dodged the wing positions . Their style of play is mainly characterized by their great speed and their extraordinary ball handling and shooting technique. In addition, she is considered to be a strong dribbler and extremely dangerous for goals, but at the same time plays helpful to the team. In the 2008 season , Marta provided 19 assists in 18 games in addition to her 23 goals.
In the Brazilian national team she usually plays alongside her strike partner Cristiane . Here, too, she does not act as a pure center forward , but regularly engages in building up the game in midfield. Marta scored 108 goals in 154 international matches, including the record number of 17 World Cup goals; Nevertheless, despite her high risk of scoring, she is not unconditionally looking for a degree and often acts as a template for her teammates.
Personal
Marta has been a UN ambassador since October 2010. She is fluent in Swedish, Portuguese and English. Marta is an avowed Catholic . Since March 2017, she has both Brazilian and Swedish citizenship.
