history

1980s

Umeå IK had a women's team in the junior series as early as 1982-1983, until it was decided on September 9, 1984 to form a women's team. The players came from the club and the first coach was Roland Arnqvist (now head of the football department). The team made its league debut in the game year in Division 4, where third place was achieved. The following year they became champions and were promoted to Division 3. The rise continued with third place in 1987 and the championship the following year. In 1989 they reached 8th place in Division 2.

1990s

At the beginning of the 1990s there was a small slump when UIK only reached 11th place and was therefore relegated to Division 3. However, the direct return to division 2, where they played again in the 1992 season.

They even managed to march through, and in 1993 they played for the first time in Division 1, where they finished with an 8th place. The successes continued: in 1994 they reached third place, and the following year again the league championship, whereby they had arrived in the top Swedish league, the Damallsvenskan . However, the relegation did not succeed: in 1996 they only achieved a 10th place and were relegated to Division 1. This kink was short-lived, however, because the UIK won Division 1 in 1997 with 30 more goals than the runner-up.

The year before, Susanne Granberg had been employed as the club's head of marketing. Intensive work on the acquisition of sponsors created an economic basis for top-class football.

In 1998 the UIK was back in Damallsvenskan and this time things went better for the team so they could get 7th place. That year Hanna Ljungberg was recruited from Sunnanå SK . The UIK was now established in the Damallsvenskan and hired Richard Holmlund as a coach before the 1999 season . Under his direction, the training was intensified and the team became a top team, which resulted in a second place. The Damallsvenskan was decided at the time by final games, where the UIK lost in the semifinals against Malmö FF .

From 2000

In 2000 the UIK dethroned the previous champion Älvsjö AIK and won its first Swedish championship. The stars of the team were Emma Lindqvist , Therese Kapstad , Tina Nordlund , Hanna Ljungberg and Malin Moström .

In 2001 they became champions for the second time and with the victory at the Swedish Cup they even managed a double. Hanna Ljungberg was in great shape and scored 26 goals. The championship also qualified for the new UEFA Women's Cup .

In 2002 they became champions again. Hanna Ljungberg scored 39 goals, which is a record in Damallsvenskan. The UIK was successful at the first UEFA Women's Cup and made it to the final, where it lost to 1. FFC Frankfurt because the team suffered from bad luck with injuries and Hanna Ljungberg was suspended for two yellow cards in previous games. However, by winning the Swedish Cup, another double was achieved. That year, the Finnish national players Sanna Valkonen and Laura Kalmari were also recruited.

2003 started well for UIK with victory in the UEFA Cup, where he defeated the Danish club Fortuna Hjørring in the final . In autumn he lost the final sprint in the league by an away defeat against Sunnanå SK and could not be champions again. The newly formed team Djurgårdens IF / Älvsjö won the championship. However, the UIK was again the cup winner. The Brazilian player Marta was recruited in the fall .

2004 started well when they defeated 1. FFC Frankfurt and won the UEFA Cup again. Everything seemed to point to a new championship title, but after a form failure in autumn, both the championship and the cup went to Djurgården / Älvsjö . Against this team they were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup. The UIK was very present in the media and they managed to keep Marta as the team's new star. Laura Kalmari left the club and changed u. a. to Djurgården / Älvsjö for private reasons.

2005 was a triumphant advance for the UIK - in the Damallsvenskan he remained undefeated. Elaine ( Brazil ), Anne Mäkinen ( Finland ) and Karolina Westberg from Malmö were new to the team . They won the championship and the UEFA Cup qualification, but the Swedish Cup went to Djurgården / Älvsjö again .

In 2006 the UIK was again undefeated in the Swedish league with 21 wins and one draw. Umeå was again the Swedish champion with 21 points ahead of Djurgården / Älvsjö. The newcomers included the Norwegians June Pedersen and Lise Klaveness

Umeå IK has been the crowd puller of Damallsvenskan since Marta moved to Sweden, although the club attracts even more spectators away than at the Gammliavallen stadium at home. In 2006, however, the number of spectators fell dramatically, which was partly due to the men's soccer World Cup in Germany, but also to the scheduling in the 2006 season, which involved many breaks in the game.

The UIK was able to reach the 2008 UEFA Cup final against 1. FFC Frankfurt . The first leg in Sweden ended 1: 1, but in the second leg the team had to admit defeat 2: 3.

In the 2016 season, the UIK occupied the penultimate place in the table and was relegated to the second-highest league Eliettan .
