Anne Maarit Mäkinen (born February 1, 1976 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish football player . The midfielder was most recently under contract with the Swedish club AIK Solna and was a member of the Finnish national team .

Athletic career

Club player

Mäkinen started her career at JNK Laajasalo . She switched to HJK Helsinki via KontU Helsinki . In 1993 she won the Finnish Cup with HJK and was voted Footballer of the Year. A year later Mäkinen switched to Malmin PS and won the Finnish championship. In the mid-1990s she graduated from the University of Notre Dame and played for the soccer team. Mäkinen was elected to the All-Star-Team four times in a row and in 2000 she was named best player. Between 2001 and 2003 she played in the US professional league WUSA for Washington Freedom and Philadelphia Charge , then for the New Jersey Wildcats in the W-League . In 2004 she was voted Finnish Footballer of the Year again. In 2005 Mäkinen moved to Sweden to Umeå IK and won the Swedish championship in 2005 and 2006. After a guest appearance at Bälinge IF in the 2007 season, she moved to AIK Solna in 2008.

National player

On June 8, 1991 Mäkinen made his debut in the Finnish national team in a game against the Soviet Union . She took part with the national team at the 2005 European Championship in England, where Finland reached the semi-finals. She scored 16 goals in 115 international matches. By March 9, 2009, she was the record-breaking Finnish national player with 113 internationals, but was then surpassed by Sanna Valkonen , who has now made 119 internationals.

Personal

After a short sejour as assistant coach of the Finnish national team, Anne Mäkinen is currently (as of 2010) mainly concentrating on completing her training as a naprapath .
