She played for her high school team while in high school in Delran. While still in high school she also played in the W-League for Central Jersey Splash , New Brunswick Power and South Jersey Banshees , after enrolling at Rutgers University for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and once for the New Jersey Wildcats .

In the 2009 season she played in Women's Professional Soccer for the Chicago Red Stars , for which she scored two goals in 16 games.

On December 17, 2010, she signed with Atlanta Beat , for which she played in the 2011 WPS season.

From 2013 to 2014 she played in the newly founded National Women's Soccer League , the highest American professional league in women's football, for Western New York Flash . For the 2015 season, she switched to league rivals Houston Dash in exchange for Becky Edwards and Whitney Engen .

On February 15, 2017, Lloyd signed a loan deal with Manchester City WFC that ran until June 2017 . With the Citizens she became English runner-up and won the FA Women's Cup and scored a goal in the 4-1 final win over Birmingham. In the 2016/17 UEFA Women's Champions League , she played four games in quarter-finals and semi-finals. She scored the winning goals in the 1-0 away wins against Fortuna Hjørring and Olympique Lyon . But since the semi-final home game against Lyon was lost 3-1, the Citizens were eliminated. After the end of the English season she returned to Houston Dash and finished the season there in eighth place.

For the 2018 season she moved to Sky Blue FC together with her teammate Janine Beckie . With the team she only took last place, but was still elected to the NWSL Second XI.

National teams

With the U-21 national team, she took part in the Nordic Cup four times , which the USA won each time.

After training with the senior national team for the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004 , she made her first senior international match in a 7-0 win against Ukraine on July 10, 2005 , one of the two biggest defeats in Ukraine. The first international goal was the 8-0 on October 1, 2006 in a 10-0 win over Taiwan .

The year 2007 began for her by winning the Algarve Cup , in which she scored a goal in each of the four games, making her top scorer and best player of the tournament. At the 2007 World Cup it was used in the first five games, it was only not used in the final game for third place. In 2008 she was able to repeat winning the Algarve Cup and score a goal in the first game against China. At the Olympic Games in Beijing , she scored the decisive goal in extra time in the final for a 1-0 win over Brazil and was then voted American Footballer of the Year . In the group game against Japan, she had scored the only goal to win 1-0.

Although she suffered a broken ankle early in the WPS season and only played five games for Sky Blue FC , she made 15 international appearances in 2010 and scored the first goal in the 2010 Algarve Cup in a 3-2 final win over Germany .

For the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup 2010 , in which the US team missed direct qualification for the 2011 World Cup in third place , it was fit again and was used in all five games. She scored the goal for the USA in the semi-finals, which they lost 2-1 to Mexico. In the playoff games against Italy that were necessary as a result , she played her 100th international match in the second leg .

Lloyd was part of the US squad for the 2011 World Cup in Germany . In the second World Cup match against Colombia , she scored the goal to make it 3-0 in the 57th minute and was named Player of the Game. In the quarter-finals against Brazil , which the USA won after 2-2 after extra time 5-3 on penalties, they converted the second penalty for the US team. After beating France in the semi-final, she was in the final against Japan. After it was 2-2 after extra time, the penalty shoot-out had to decide again. Here Lloyd appeared as the second US shooter, but shot over the gate. Since before Shannon Boxx and later Tobin Heath could not convert their attempts, the penalty shootout went 3-1 to Japan and the US team won silver.

On January 24, 2012, she scored three goals in a 4-0 win over Mexico in the qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games .

Lloyd was in the squad for the Olympic football tournament in London and was used in all six games. In the final against Japan on August 9, 2012, she scored both goals for the USA. She is the second player after Tiffeny Milbrett to score three goals in Olympic finals. She scored a total of 6 goals in the Olympic Games, making her the US team's second-best goalscorer at the Olympic Games. With the 2-1 victory she won the gold medal for the second time.

On December 12, she made her 150th international match in a 4-0 win against China, making it 2-0 in the meantime.

On November 10, 2013 she received the yellow-red card in the 4-1 win against Brazil in the second minute of stoppage time and was not used in the next friendly.

On April 10, 2014, she scored two goals in a 3-0 win over China, including her 50th international goal .

She was also part of the US squad for the 2015 World Cup in Canada . She was used in all seven games, where she led the team four times as captain on the field, since the actual captain Christie Rampone and the first substitute captain Abby Wambach were not used or were not in the starting line-up. On June 26, 2015, she made her 200th international match against China in the quarter-finals of the 2015 World Cup , scoring the 1-0 winner. In the semifinals against Germany , her teammate Alex Morgan was fouled on the edge of the penalty area in the 69th minute, whereupon the referee gave a penalty, which Lloyd converted to 1-0. She then prepared the 2-0 through Kelley O'Hara , who scored her first international goal. In the final against Japan, she scored three goals in a 5-2 win, including the first two in the 3rd and 5th minutes and the 4-0 goal from a shot from the center line. The latter was voted the most beautiful goal of the tournament and later included in the selection for the “FIFA Puskas Award”. Lloyd now holds the records for the earliest (3rd minute) and most (three) goals in a women's World Cup final. She was then awarded the “Golden Ball” as the best player in the World Cup, and the second best goalscorer - due to the longer playing time with the same number of hits - with the “Silver Shoe”. On January 11, 2016, she was named World Player of the Year at the FIFA Ballon d'Or Gala in Zurich .

In January 2016 she became "Team Captain" of the US national team together with Becky Sauerbrunn . She had previously performed the function several times due to Christie Rampone's injuries .

She was part of the roster for the 2016 Summer Olympics qualifier , which the United States won. She was used in all five games, with the exception of the final one goal each, including the only goal of the game in the group game against Mexico . She was chosen as one of the two best strikers in the tournament's all-star team.

At the Olympic Games, she was the captain of the US team, which for the first time did not survive the quarter-finals, as they lost there on penalties to the Swedes trained by former US national coach Pia Sundhage .

On April 8, 2018, she scored her 100th international goal as the sixth US player in a 6-2 win against Mexico with the interim goal of 3-2. In total, she came to 19 internationals in 2018, including her 250th on March 7, 2018 in a 1-0 win against England, whereby the USA won the SheBelieves Cup for the second time . However, she was only in the starting line-up five times, including at the 2018 Tournament of Nations , where she only played 30 minutes. When she won the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup 2018 , she was only in the starting line-up in a 5-0 win in the second group game against Panama , but scored three goals. By winning the Gold Cup, the USA qualified for the 2019 World Cup. In the World Cup year, she was in the starting line-up only once in the first seven games of the year and was substituted on five times, including the SheBelieves Cup , where she only played ten minutes . On May 1, 2019, she was nominated for the 2019 World Cup and thus for her fourth World Cup. At the World Cup, she was one of the four players in the squad who were used in all seven games. But she only played over 90 minutes in the second group game against Chile , when most of the regular players were not used. In the other games she was mostly substituted on towards the end of the game and came in for a further 103 minutes. She was able to increase her goal account by three goals to ten World Cup goals, making her one of the eleven players with at least ten World Cup goals. In addition, together with Abby Wambach, with a total of 25 World Cup games, she is now third among the players with the most World Cup games . With her three-minute stint in the final, she is one of the six players who have made it to three World Cup finals.

With 294 international matches, she is currently third on the record player list in the USA . Of the currently active players, only Canadian Christine Sinclair has played more international matches (296). With her 123 international goals she is the fourth best goalscorer in the USA.

With 15 games, she is the record player in the SheBelieves Cup , making her the only player to be featured in all games in the USA at this tournament, which has been held in spring since 2016.
