Christine Margaret Sinclair , OC (born June 12, 1983 in Burnaby , British Columbia ) is a Canadian soccer player . She plays for Portland Thorns FC and for the Canadian national team . She has been the record national player for Canada since February 20, 2010 and the world record scorer since January 29, 2020. In December 2012, Sinclair in Canada became the first female footballer to be awarded the Lou Marsh Trophy, which has been awarded since 1936, as Sportsman of the Year.

Career

At the age of eleven, Sinclair was appointed to the U-14 Junior All-Star Team of the British Columbia Province . With the Burnaby South Secondary School, she won three league championships. In 2000 she made her debut for the Canadian national team at the Algarve Cup . At the tournament she was the top scorer in her team.

A year later she moved to the University of Portland. In the first season she scored 23 goals and thus became the most successful goalscorer of all "freshmen" (players / women in the first college season). The magazine “Soccer America” named her “Freshman of the year” and Sinclair became an All-American (selection of the best college players of the season).

In 2002 she scored seven goals at the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup and shared the top scorer's crown with Charmaine Hooper and the American Tiffeny Milbrett . With the U-19 national team, she was runner- up at the 2002 World Cup in Canada. She scored ten goals and was named top scorer and best player.

The year was also very successful for Sinclair nationally. With 26 goals she was the top scorer in the college league. In the final against Santa Clara University, she scored two goals and secured her team the championship. Again she was voted "All American" and was named Player of the Year at the West Coast Conference. In 2003 she finished fourth at the World Cup with the Canadian national team .

Her final college season, 2005, was a historic year. With 39 goals she was again top scorer and set a new league record. In the final against UCLA Bruins , she scored two goals in her team's 4-0 win. She was again voted Player of the Year by the West Coast Conference and became only the second player to receive this award three times. After all, she became the third female soccer player to be awarded the Honda-Broderick Cup as college athlete of the year.

Since 2006 she played for the Vancouver Whitecaps Women in the W-League . Also in 2006 she was voted Canadian Footballer of the Year.

On August 30, 2007, Sinclair made her 100th international match in a friendly against Japan.

In 2008 she took part in the Olympic Games in Beijing , but was eliminated in the quarterfinals with 1: 2 a n. V. against the USA.

On February 20, 2010 she scored her 100th international goal in a 3-0 win against Poland in Larnaka , making her one of the twelve players who have so far succeeded.

From 2009 to 2010 she played in Women's Professional Soccer for FC Gold Pride , and in 2011 for Western New York Flash . With both teams she won the WPS title.

On January 23, 2011, she made her 150th international match at the Four Nations Tournament in the People's Republic of China against the USA .

On June 26, 2011, she suffered a broken nose in the opening game against Germany . She refused a substitution and scored the 1: 2 goal in the 82nd minute, making her the first player to score a goal at a World Cup against Nadine Angerer who had previously not received a goal in 621 World Cup minutes. The goal was then nominated for the "Goal of the Tournament" election. In the second game against France, she played with a face mask. Ten minutes before the end of the game, which was lost 4-0, she was hit in the face from close range by a ball and had to be treated briefly. She also played with a face mask in the subsequent 1-0 draw against Nigeria. According to her trainer, the injury only allowed her to achieve 40% of her capacity. Due to the defeat, Canada was eliminated from bottom of the group without winning points.

Christine Sinclair with the Portland Thorns (2013)

In the qualifying tournament for the 2012 Olympic Games , she scored nine goals and was the top scorer. She scored at least once in all games except the final, which was lost 4-0 to the USA.

In 2012, she was also a participant in the Summer Olympics with the Canadian national team and, after losing to world champions Japan , reached the quarter-finals as one of the two best thirds in the group. There they won against the hosts . In the semifinals against the USA , she brought her team three times in front, but had to accept the equalizer again and again and the 3: 4 in extra time in extra time. In the game for third place against France , she led her team to a 1-0 victory and won a medal at the Olympic Games for the first time. With six goals she was the top scorer of the tournament and with a total of eight goals she is in fourth place on the record scorers list together with the two Brazilians Marta and Pretinha . Criticizing the referee's performance in the semi-finals, FIFA suspended her for four games and fined her. So she could not take part in the Four Nations Tournament 2013 and on March 6, 2013 in the first game of the Cyprus Cup 2013 . It is the only game of the Canadians at the Cyprus Cup to date, in which they were not used. In total, she played 30 of 31 games in the Cyprus Cup.

Since Western New York Flash disbanded in 2012, she was initially without a club.

In the 2013 season she played in the newly founded National Women's Soccer League , the highest American professional league in women's football for Portland Thorns FC .

On December 12, 2013 she made her 200th international match as the 13th player and first Canadian, scoring her 147th international goal.

On January 15, 2015, she scored her 150th and 151st international goals in her 217th international match in the 2015 Four Nations Tournament against China. She won the tournament with her team and was voted the most valuable player of the tournament.

In May 2015 the Canadian Post issued a postage stamp for the 2015 World Cup showing Sinclair and her teammate Kadeisha Buchanan in the national team.

At the 2015 World Championships she scored in the opening match in injury time by penalty the 1: 0 win matches.

On December 13, 2015, she scored her 158th international goal, which initially made her the second best goalscorer in the world together with the American Mia Hamm . On February 14, 2016, she was the sole second-best goalscorer in the qualifying tournament for the 2016 Summer Olympics with her 159th international goal. Only Abby Wambach , who played her last international match on December 16, 2015, scored more goals with 184 goals. In total, she came to four appearances in the tournament - only two of them in the starting line-up - in which she scored three goals, including two in the semi-finals in a 3-1 win against Costa Rica , which qualified the Canadian team for the Olympic Games. At the Olympic Games, she reached the knockout round with her team without losing points, scoring the goal in the first game against Australia to make it 2-0 and also scoring the second goal in the 3-1 win against Zimbabwe . In the preliminary round win against Germany - the Canadians' first win against Germany - it was not used. In the knockout round, she was used again in all games, but lost with her team in the semi-finals against Germany. Like four years before, they were in the game for the bronze medal, where they met hosts Brazil. The game was her 250th international match and with her goal to 2-0 (final score 2-1) she not only contributed to winning the medal, but is now also the second best goalscorer at the Olympic Games with a total of 11 goals.

At the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup 2018 , she contributed four goals to qualifying the Canadians for the 2019 World Cup. On May 25, 2019, she was nominated for the 2019 World Cup . She was used in her fifth World Cup participation in the four games of the Canadians and was only substituted in the group final against the Netherlands in the 69th minute - nine minutes after she had equalized 1-1 with her tenth World Cup goal. With this goal she became the second player after Marta to always score at least one goal in five World Cup appearances. Although their team had to concede one goal after their substitution and finished second in the group, they had already made it to the round of 16. In the last sixteen she was eliminated with her team against the later third Sweden . With 21 World Cup appearances, she is 13th among the players with the most World Cup games.

On January 29, 2020, as part of the CONCACAF qualification for the Olympic Games, she set Abby Wambach's world record in an 11-0 win against St. Kitts and Nevis in the 7th minute of the game by converting a foul penalty to lead 1-0 with her 184th international goal and increased it in the 23rd minute to 185 goals.
