qualification

The CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup 2018 served as a qualification for the CONCACAF teams , in which the two finalists and the third placed could qualify directly for the World Cup and the fourth placed could reach the Pan-American playoffs against the third of the South American Women's Football Championship 2018 . Canada was automatically qualified for the Gold Cup and met Costa Rica, Jamaica and Cuba at the tournament in the USA . In the first game Jamaica was defeated 2-0. The subsequent 12: 0 against Cuba was their biggest international defeat for the Cubans. With a 3-1 win against Costa Rica, Canada secured group victory and met Panama in the semi-finals. The Canadians qualified 7-0 for the final and the World Cup in France. In the final they were defeated by the USA 2-0 - for the Canadians the 50th loss in their 60th game against the USA.

Overall, national coach Kenneth Heiner-Møller , who took over the post in January 2018, deployed 20 players, only nine of whom were already in the squad for the 2015 World Cup. Six players appeared in all five games, including Diana Matheson , who made her 200th international match in the semifinals. The best goalscorers were Adriana Leon with 6 goals as well as Jordyn Huitema and record scorer Christine Sinclair with four goals each. A total of nine players contributed at least one goal to a total of 24 goals.

For the World Cup group draw that took place on December 8, 2018, Canada was allocated Pot 1 based on its placement in the FIFA World Ranking on December 7, 2018. The team could not meet world champions USA, Germany or hosts France. Because of the mode, she was also unable to meet Jamaica. Canada was drawn as the group head of Group E. Like four years before, the draw was drawn for Oceania champions New Zealand and European champions Netherlands, making this the only group with two continental champions. The third group opponent is Cameroon.

There were eleven games against New Zealand before the World Cup, with six wins, four draws and one defeat in the first game in 1987. The last time they met in the group stage of the last World Cup was goalless. There was one more game against the Netherlands with nine wins and three draws. The last time there was a 2-1 win in Eindhoven in April 2016. The only World Cup match between the two of them at the last World Cup ended 1-1. The Canadians had never played against Cameroon. In the junior women's division there was a game at the U17 World Cup in 2016 , which the Canadians won 3-2. With Julia Grosso , Jordyn Huitema , Emma Regan and Deanne Rose , four players from the Gold Cup squad were used, as well as a Cameroonian player from the squad of the last African Cup, where Cameroon qualified for the World Cup. Canada reached the second round with two wins, missed group victory with their first defeat against the Netherlands and lost in the second round in the 23rd game for the 14th time against the Swedes.
