Sophie Diana Schmidt (born June 28, 1988 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian soccer player . Schmidt has German ancestors, her grandparents come from Paraguay . She studied German. She has played for the Canadian national team since 2005 .
Career
societies
After the Summer Olympics in London, Schmidt signed for the Swedish Damallsvenskan club Kristianstads DFF in July 2012 .
In the 2013 season she played in the newly founded National Women's Soccer League , the highest American professional league in women's football for Sky Blue FC .
On July 31, 2015, Schmidt initially signed a one-year contract with the Bundesliga club 1. FFC Frankfurt .
In November 2016 she extended her contract in Frankfurt, which was initially extended for another season in May, until June 30, 2018.
The midfielder was bid farewell on June 3, 2018 in Frankfurt am Main and returned to Canada after 55 Bundesliga games for 1. FFC Frankfurt . From August 2018 to spring 2019, she kept fit on the men's soccer team at the University of Victoria before Schmidt signed for Houston Dash on March 12, 2019 .
National teams
Schmidt went through the Canadian youth national teams and played a total of 29 times for the U-19/20 teams. With the U-19 team, she reached the quarter-finals at the 2004 Women's U-19 World Cup , and won the silver medal at the 2006 CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship , thereby qualifying for U-20 football - 2006 Women's World Cup , but Canada was eliminated in the preliminary round.
Schmidt made her first international match against the Netherlands on April 19, 2005 at the age of 16 . From then on she was part of the team's tribe and played every year until 2009, but continued to play for the U-20 team until 2008, with which she won the CONCACAF U-20 championship for women in 2008 - the final against the USA was their last U-20 game.
In 2006 she won silver at the Gold Cup , in 2007 she took part in the World Cup, where Canada was eliminated in the preliminary round and she was used in all three games and scored one goal. At the 2008 Summer Olympics , she and her team made it to the quarter-finals. There they lost 2-1 in extra time against eventual tournament winners United States .

She was also in the starting line-up in the other two group games, but retired with Canada after three defeats in the preliminary round.
She was also nominated for the 2012 Olympic Games . She was in the starting line-up in all six games and won the bronze medal with Canada.
On March 6, 2013, she made her 100th international match against Switzerland in the Cyprus Cup and scored the 1-0 opening goal in the second minute.
A year later, on March 5, 2014, she was in the starting line-up for the 100th time in the first game of the Cyprus Cup 2014 against Finland , where she contributed the first two goals to the 3-0 win.
In 2015 she was appointed to the squad for the World Cup in her own country . There she was chosen to play the opening game. However, the Canadians were eliminated in the quarter-finals against England .
She was also on the roster for the 2016 Summer Olympics qualifier , where Canada qualified for the Olympics. She was used in all games and was in the starting line-up three times. Almost three weeks after qualifying for the Olympics, she won the Algarve Cup with Canada for the first time with a 2-1 final victory over Brazil .
On July 20, 2016, she made her 150th international match in a friendly against China .
At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , she won the bronze medal with the Canadian team again, where she was used in all six games, scored the only goal of the game in the quarter-finals against France and won the bronze medal against hosts Brazil.
On May 25, 2019, she was nominated for the 2019 World Cup . She was used in the Canadians' four games and did not miss a minute, but was eliminated with her team in the round of 16 against later third Sweden .
Personal
Schmidt has been in a relationship with the New Zealand actor and singer Nic Kyle since 2017 . The couple married on December 31, 2018 in Christchurch , New Zealand .
