The Algarve Cup 2016 was the 23rd edition of this important tournament series for women's national soccer teams and took place from March 2nd to 9th, 2016, as in previous years, at various venues in the Algarve , the southernmost region of Portugal . Eight teams were registered for the tournament, including none of the previous tournament winners.
Of the teams that previously took part in all the events and were also part of the organizers, Norway and Sweden did not take part because the qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games was taking place at the same time . For the same reason, Switzerland , which took part for the first time in 2015, was unable to participate. Furthermore, there was no China or Asian champions Japan , who took part in the Asian Olympic qualification that took place at the same time .
The top three teams in the last edition USA (world champions), France and Germany (European champions) and England ( Cyprus Cup winner of the previous year) instead contested the first-ever SheBelieves Cup in the USA at the invitation of the USA. Olympic host Brazil , who also took part for the first time in 2015, was the only participant in the top 10 of the FIFA world rankings . With Canada, one of the two record winners of the Cyprus Cup took part, which, like in previous years, took place parallel to the Algarve Cup, this time with only eight teams and with the Italians in 13th place as the best-placed team in the FIFA world rankings. By winning the tournament, Canada became the first team to win both the Algarve Cup and the Cyprus Cup.
For the first time, the top four places were taken by teams from four different confederations (CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, UEFA and OFC).
