Notre-Dame du Port-du-Salut Monastery (lat. Abbatia BM de Portu Salutis ) is a French Trappist - abbey in Entrammes at Laval in Mayenne .

history

On February 21, 1815, on the remains of a priory of the Congrégation de France in Entrammes, which had been closed by the French Revolution, the Trappists around Bernard de Girmont , who were returning from Darfeld Abbey, founded Jean-Baptiste Le Clerc de La with the help of the former Darfelder Donaten (monastery member without vows) Roussière, a friend of Girmont's, the first French monastery of the Restoration period and called it Port du Salut (Port of Salvation). They elected Girmont as their prior (under the Abbot Eugène de Laprade in Darfeld ) and from 1816 as their abbot.

The famous Port Salut cheese originated from the monastery (protected brand since 1874), the secret of which was brought from Darfeld but sold in 1959. The German counterpart is the Trappist cheese .

In the person of the historian Maur Cocheril, the monastery played a part in the creation (in 1970) of the partnership between Entrammes and the Westphalian town of Rosendahl , of which Darfeld is a district.
