The Algarve Cup 2017 was the 24th edition of this important tournament series for women's national soccer teams and took place from March 1st to 8th, 2017, as in previous years, at various venues in the Algarve , the southernmost region of Portugal . The tournament was organized by the football associations of Denmark , Norway , Portugal and Sweden . Of the teams that did not take part in the previous year for various reasons, China, Japan, Norway and Sweden took part again. In contrast, record winners USA and Olympic champions Germany as well as England and France did not take part again because they met at the second SheBelieves Cup during this time . The top participant in the FIFA world rankings was defending champion Canada (4th). Other top 10 participants were Australia (6th), Japan (7th) and Sweden (8th). For the first time, the Spanish national soccer team of women took part, which won the tournament, which was the first time a tournament novice could win. The tournament also serves as preparation for the European Championship for the eight European participants. As in previous years, the Cyprus Cup took place at the same time .

Regulations

Twelve national teams took part in the tournament. Since FIFA classifies the games as friendlies, each team was allowed to replace six players per game. A maximum of four game interruptions could be used for this, but a maximum of three of them in the second half.

For the ranking in the groups in the event of a tie, the direct comparison was first applied, then the better goal difference from all group matches, then the higher number of goals scored in all group matches, the fair play rating and, as a final criterion, the placement in the FIFA world rankings.

If two equally ranked teams in different groups were equal, the better goal difference from all group matches was the first to apply, then the higher number of goals scored in all group matches, the fair play rating and, as a final criterion, the placement in the FIFA world rankings.
