Parchal is a small town and former municipality in the Algarve in southern Portugal .

The place has increasingly developed into the dormitory city of the neighboring city of Portimão . Parts of the port of Portimão are also in the area of the municipality of Parchal, such as the marina there .

history

The village emerged after the bridges over the Rio Arade over to the city of Portimão were built, such as the road bridge in 1876 and the railway bridge of the Linha do Algarve in 1889. With the settlement of the fishing and fish processing industry at the beginning of the 20th century, the real development of Parchal began.

In the course of housing programs after the Carnation Revolution in 1974, the town began to grow steadily.

The independent municipality of Parchal was created on July 12, 1997 by outsourcing from the municipality of Estômbar .

On July 12, 2001 Parchal was elevated to a small town ( Vila ).

Since the territorial reform in 2013 , Parchal and Estômbar have formed a common municipality.
