history

The Moors named the place Sanabus , which was part of a fortress called Abenabeci . During the Christian Reconquista , the Portuguese King D. Sancho I conquered the place in 1191.

It remained a small, agricultural place, which achieved a relative prosperity through the salt production and trade over the Rio Arade .

Estômbar experienced an upswing with the emergence of the canned fish industry in the 19th century and the subsequent increase in population.

On August 16, 1991, Estômbar was elevated to a small town ( Vila ).

After Estômbar had lost part of its area in 1997 through the outsourcing of the newly created municipality Parchal , both municipalities were dissolved with the territorial reform in 2013 and merged into the new municipality Estômbar e Parchal .
