The 1996 Algarve Cup was the third edition of the annual tournament for women's national football teams and took place between March 11 and 17, 1996 in the Portuguese Algarve . The Norwegian team won the tournament ahead of the defending champions Sweden and China .

Eight teams took part in the invitation tournament in 1996. First-time participants are marked in italics .

Tournament course

The eight participating teams were divided into two groups and met in a round-robin tournament . In the final round that followed, the fourth, third and second group players played for seventh, fifth and third places, and the group winners in the final for the tournament victory.
