On August 28 of the following year, the team drew 2-2 against Norway in the first international match recognized by the world football association FIFA .

In 1995 the team took part for the first time in the European Championship , which was then held without qualification . After three unsuccessful attempts to qualify, one was able to qualify for three consecutive European championships ( 2009 , 2013 and 2017 ); reaching the quarter-finals in 1995 and 2013 represents the best result so far. Iceland achieved its best placement in the FIFA world rankings , 15th place, for the first time in September 2011 and most recently in August 2013. The record national player is Katrín Jónsdóttir with 133 appearances; The most successful goalscorer is Margrét Lára Viðarsdóttir , who was active again after a baby break with 79 goals, but she was injured in the 2017 European Championship finals.
