Career
In the club
Gunnhildur started her career in 2003 at UMF Stjarnan in Pepsideild kvenna . In 2010 she became captain of the team and led it to her first championship in 2011. They also won the trophy for the first time in 2012, scoring the only goal in the final against Valur Reykjavík . She also led her team to the Super Cup victory in 2012. On September 26, 2012, she played her only CL game so far in the round of 32 of the 2012/13 UEFA Women's Champions League against Russian runner-up FC Sorki Krasnogorsk . Already in the 37th minute she received the yellow-red card . The game remained goalless and after a 3-1 draw in the second leg, for which they were suspended, the Icelanders were eliminated.
In 2013 she moved to Norway and played in the Toppserien for Arna-Bjørnar , Grand Bodø IK , Stabæk and Vålerenga , but could not win a title with any of these clubs. In 2018 she moved to the USA and played in the 2018 National Women's Soccer League for Utah Royals FC . In fifth place, the Royals missed the NWSL Championship play-offs. After the end of the season she was awarded to the Australian club Adelaide United . Here, too, she and her team missed the final round of the best four teams - this time in sixth place. Also in the National Women's Soccer League 2019 it was only enough for sixth place.
National teams
In 2004 she took part in the Nordic Cup with the U-17 team , but could only win a point in the group stage in a 2-2 draw against Norway . The games against Germany and Sweden were lost 7-0 and 6-0 respectively. The game for 7th place against Finland was won 3-2. In September she took part with the U-19 team in the first qualifying round for the U-19 European Women's Football Championship in 2005 , but lost the three games against Greece (0: 4), Ireland (0: 1) and Switzerland (1: 4).
On October 26, 2011, the captain of the Icelandic champions and league player of the year came to her first appearance in the Icelandic national team when she won the last game of the year in a 2-0 away win against Northern Ireland as part of the qualification for the European Championship 2013 came on in the 89th minute for Hólmfríður Magnúsdóttir . At the end of February / beginning of March 2012, she and the team took part in the Algarve Cup 2012 , in which the Icelanders took sixth place. She had her first starting eleven in the first game in the 1-0 defeat against Germany , but was replaced as the first player after 63 minutes. In the two following group games against Sweden and China she was substituted on and in the game for fifth place against Denmark she played over 90 minutes for the first time. She also took part in the Algarve Cup 2013 , where after three defeats in the group games, the game for 9th place against Hungary was won 4-1. She was then not nominated for the EM 2013 and did not play any club games until May 2014. It was not used again until September 2014 as part of the qualification for the 2015 World Cup . She also took part in the Algarve Cup 2015 , where the Icelanders had a respectable success in the goalless draw against the USA , but lost all other games and finished the tournament in tenth place.
In the first game after the tournament, on April 4, 2015, she managed to equalize in a 2-1 win against the Netherlands with her first international goal. She was now a regular player and was not used in the next 44 international matches for the Icelanders only once - on February 14, 2016. She also took part in the 2017 European Championship , but the Icelanders were eliminated after the group stage after three defeats. Two months after the end of the European Championship, she scored two goals in an international match for the first time in an 8-0 win in the qualifying game for the 2019 World Cup against the Faroe Islands and a month later with 3-2 for the first time against Germany. The World Cup could not be reached, however, because the second leg was lost 2-0 and as the last game against the Czech Republic only scored 1-1, the Icelanders were eliminated as the fifth-best runner-up in the group.
