The eighth U-19 European Women's Football Championship was held in Hungary from July 20 to 31, 2005 . Russia won the tournament with a 6-5 victory on penalties over France and thus became European champions for the first time. For France it was the third participation in the finals in a row. While Austria could not qualify, Germany reached the semi-finals and Switzerland reached fifth place. Players born on January 1, 1986 or later were eligible to play.

All 40 teams registered alongside hosts Hungary were divided into ten groups of four teams each for the first qualifying round. The group winners and runners-up as well as the eight best group thirds in each group reached the second qualifying round, which was held in seven groups of four teams each. Here defending champion Spain failed to France. The seven group winners of this round reached the final round, which was initially held in a group stage with two groups of 4 teams each, in addition to Hungary, who had already qualified as host. The group winners and second reached the semifinals, in which the finalists were determined in a knockout mode. The semi-finals also qualified for the 2006 U-20 Women's World Cup . Since Russia was already qualified to host this tournament, the two thirds in the group had to determine the fifth European participant in a decider.
