The fifth U-19 European Women's Football Championship was held in Sweden from May 2 to May 12, 2002 . Germany was able to defend its title again and became European champions for the third time with a 3-1 victory over France. The top scorer was Claire Morel from France and Barbara Müller from Germany with four goals each. The Switzerland was eliminated in the group stage, Austria failed to qualify.

qualification

There were three group phases, with the four group winners of the third group phase and the three best runners-up qualifying for the final round. Host Sweden qualified automatically.

Venues

The preliminary round was held in Helsingborg , Staffanstorp , Ängelholm , Kävlinge , Höganäs and Båstad . The semi-finals were played in Landskrona , while the final took place in Helsingborg.

Defending champion Germany won all of their group games and qualified for the semi-finals as group winners. Host Sweden, however, fell out of the group as the bottom of the group.

Final round

Semifinals

Both semi-finals were even and ended with a close result. The German selection won 1-0 against England with a penalty from Anne-Kathrin Sabel converted in the 29th minute . The other semi-final between Denmark and France also ended with the same result, the only goal scorer was French Claire Morel in the 35th minute.

final

In the final, France and Germany faced each other again, the French initially had the better start and took the lead in the 9th minute through Sandrine Rouquet . The German team was able to equalize through Isabell Bachor in the 33rd minute, before Barbara Müller scored 2-1 two minutes before the break after missing a penalty shortly before. Viola Odebrecht made the preliminary decision when she made it 3-1 in the 70th minute. The game saw 1205 spectators.

With this victory, the German team qualified together with France, Denmark and England for the first U-19 World Cup for women in Canada in 2002 . There Germany achieved 3rd place as the best European team.
