The Faroese national football team represents the Faroe Islands football association in international women's football . In addition to the A-team, there is currently an U-19 and U-17 selection . Most of the players come from the record champions KÍ Klaksvík .
history
The team played their first two games in Iceland in June 1986 against the Icelandic women's national football team , which they lost 6-0 and 2-0.
After the FSF joined FIFA in 1988 and the men played official matches in the same year, the women did not play competitive games until 1995 in qualifying for the 1997 European Championship . After that, it was eight years before the next meetings with other official national teams. Games have been played regularly since 2004. However, the last official home game was played in 2004, after which the team only played away or on neutral courts. Only in the qualification for the 2015 World Cup were home games played again in April.
In the qualification for the World Cup was waived by 2011. The greatest sporting success was the victories of the women's football tournament at the Island Games in 2001, 2003 and 2005.
The Faroese women are currently 69th in the FIFA world rankings and 38th in the UEFA rankings for Europe (as of September 1, 2017). The best place was the 60th place in June 2009. In the pre-qualification for the EM 2013 , the team took the last place in the group at the tournament in Malta after defeats against Armenia and Georgia , but were able to defeat the hosts Malta 2-0.
In the qualification for the 2015 World Cup, the team had to go to the pre-qualification and in the games in April 2013 at the tournament in Lithuania reached a 3: 3 against Montenegro , a 1: 0 against the hosts Lithuania and a 2: 1 against Georgia and qualified thus for the actual qualification, which began in autumn 2013. There the team met Sweden and Poland for the first time in autumn 2013 . In April 2014 the first game against Northern Ireland took place in this context . The game ended goalless. Other opponents were Scotland and Bosnia and Herzegovina , against whom the Faroe Islands had previously played. The Faroese women finished the qualification with two points as the group bottom.
In the pre-qualification for the 2017 European Championship , the Faroe Islands finished second with Georgia and Malta, as the direct comparison against Georgia was lost 2-0. The games against Malta and Andorra were won 4-2 and 8-0 respectively. In qualifying for the 2019 World Cup , the Faroese met Luxembourg , Montenegro and Turkey in the pre-qualification as hosts of a mini-tournament in April 2017 and qualified for the main qualification. There are Germany , Iceland , the Czech Republic and Slovenia the opponents.
