The UEFA Women's Championship 1997 ( Engl. : UEFA Women's Championship ) was the seventh playout of the European continental championship in women's football and was held from June 29 to July 7 in Norway and Sweden instead. For the first time, two countries hosted together. Norway hosted the tournament for the second time since 1987 . For the first time, the eight participants competed against each other in a group stage in two groups with four teams each and then in a knockout system .

Defending champion Germany won the final against Italy 2-0 and became European champions for the fourth time after 1989 , 1991 and 1995 .

The German team secured their fourth title with goals from Sandra Minnert (23rd minute) and Birgit Prinz (50th minute). The final took place in Oslo in front of 2221 spectators and was chaired by referee Gitte Lyngo-Nielsen from Denmark.
