The 1994 Algarve Cup was the first edition of the annual football tournament for women’s national teams. It took place between March 16 and 20, 1994 in Portugal, with Norway as the winner. The tournament was initiated by the Swedish Football Association SvFF , whose representative traveled to Portugal in 1993 together with the responsible persons of the Danish and Norwegian associations and reached an agreement with the Portuguese association about the implementation of the tournament.
mode
The first competition was between the host Portugal, four Scandinavian teams (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden) and the USA. Only two football associations participated: CONCACAF and UEFA.
The six invited teams were divided into two groups for a round-robin tournament. At the end of this tournament, the third-placed teams in each group played against each other for fifth and sixth place, the second-placed teams played for third and fourth place and the winners of each group for first and second place in the overall ranking.
The points were awarded in the group stage according to the standard formula: three points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a loss.
