Christen Annemarie Press (born December 29, 1988 in Los Angeles , California , United States ) is an American football player who has played for Utah Royals FC since June 2018 . Since the beginning of 2013, she has also been playing for the US national team , with which she won the World Cup in 2015 and 2019.

life and career

Christen is the daughter of Cody and Stacy Press and started playing soccer when she was five. With the Chadwick Dolphins she won two titles in the "Southern Section Division IV". She scored 128 goals during her high school years, including 38 in her freshman year alone. During this time she was twice named "Southern Section Division IV Offensive Player of the Year" and four times as "Prep League Offensive MVP". She also played for the club Slammers FC and was awarded the golden shoe for most goals in the "US Youth Soccer Association national championship tournament".

Club career

Press was drafted for the 2011 season for the Washington Freedom , who played as magicJack in the WPS after changing ownership and name . On July 30, 2011, she scored three goals in a game against the Boston Breakers and was named "Rookie of the Year" because no rookie had previously succeeded. With her team she reached the playoffs, in which she failed in the semi-finals at the Philadelphia Independence .

After the end of the WPS in 2012, she moved to the Swedish Damallsvenskan to Kopparbergs / Göteborg FC and played for the first time in the quarter-finals of the 2011/12 UEFA Women's Champions League against Arsenal Ladies FC . With 17 goals she took second place in the season's goalscorer list, behind the German national player Anja Mittag . The season ended the team in fourth place and won the Swedish Cup , with Press scored the 1-0 (final score 2-1).

For the 2013 season she moved to the championship Tyresö FF with whom she won the runner-up and became the first US woman to be top scorer with 23 goals. In the following season she reached the final of the Champions League with Tyresö , which however was lost 3: 4 to the defending champions VfL Wolfsburg . Shortly thereafter, Press moved to their home country to the Chicago Red Stars , with whom they narrowly missed the play-offs at the end of the season due to the direct comparison against the tied Washington Spirit . In 2015 she finished second in the regular season, but then lost in the semi-finals of the NWSL Championship play-offs against third FC Kansas City 3-0. With 10 goals she was the top scorer of her team and was nominated for the choice of Most Valuable Player . In 2016 they finished third and then lost the semifinals to Washington Spirit with 1: 2 after extra time, whereby they had ensured extra time through their interim equalizing goal. With nine goals (eight of them in the regular season) she was again the top scorer of the Red Stars. In 2017 she was again the team's top scorer, this time with eleven goals. As fourth they reached the semifinals again, but lost it 0-1 against North Carolina Courage .

Prior to the 2018 season , she was traded from Chicago to league competitor Houston Dash . However, Press refused to play for Houston and so returned to Kopparbergs / Göteborg FC in late March 2018. In June 2018, Houston and Utah Royals FC agreed on a transfer press. With the Royals she just missed the NWSL Championship play-offs as fifth and sixth of the regular season.

Press played for the US U-20 and U-23 teams but did not take part in any World Cups. In 2012 she was part of the extended squad of the senior team for the Olympic Games in London , but was not used.

She made her first appearance for the senior team in the first game under the new national coach Tom Sermanni against his home country Scotland on February 9, 2013, with her first two goals for a 4-1 success. As the third US player, she scored two goals on her debut. She was also used in the following three games, with her getting two more goals, making her the fifth US player to get four goals in the first four games. On December 18, 2014, she scored four goals in a 7-0 win against Argentina .

In the final of the Algarve Cup 2015 against France , she scored the 2-0 final score with her 20th international goal.

She was also part of the US squad for the 2015 World Cup in Canada . In the first group game against Australia she scored the 100th World Cup goal for the USA with a 2-1 win. She was also in the starting line-up in the second group game against Sweden , but was replaced by Abby Wambach in the 67th minute . After that she was only substituted on twice: in the round of 16 against Colombia and in the quarter-finals against China . The 5-2 of her team in the final against Japan made her world champion for the first time.

She was also on the roster for the 2016 Summer Olympics qualifier , which the United States won. She was used in all five games and scored two goals in the tournament, but was only 10-0 in the last group game against Puerto Rico when some regular players were spared in the starting line-up. At the Olympic tournament she was used in all games, but only played over 90 minutes in the 2-2 draw against Colombia . In the other games she came to a total of 30 minutes of play. Their team failed in the quarterfinals due to a penalty shoot-out against the Swedes trained by their former national coach Pia Sundhage , so that the USA did not reach the final for the first time. Although she was used in all 25 games of the year, she was only in the starting line-up nine times and scored 12 goals. In 2017 she was used in all 16 games, eight times in the starting XI.

In 2018 she was only used in half of the games, but won the SheBelieves Cup 2018 , the Tournament of Nations 2018 and the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup 2018 with the team . On June 12, 2018, she made her 100th international match in a 2-1 win against China, giving her teammates the template for both goals.

On May 1, 2019, she was nominated for the 2019 World Cup . It had previously been used in the seven international matches of the year. At the World Cup, she was one of the four players in the squad who were used in all seven games. But she was only in the second group game against Chile , when most of the regular players were not used, and in the semi-finals against England , when Megan Rapinoe was spared due to injury, in the starting line-up and scored the 1-0 goal against the English in the 10th minute - Leadership (final score 2: 1). In the other five games she was substituted on, in the group games after about an hour, in the knockout games in the final minutes or stoppage time.

On November 7, 2019, she scored her 50th international goal in a 3-2 win in the friendly against Sweden.
