• The 2010 WPS Championship winner, FC Gold Pride , did not participate in 2011.
• The Chicago Red Stars also did not take part in the 2011 season because no new investor could be found.
• A new franchise was added with Western New York Flash .
• At Washington Freedom , the ownership structure had changed. The team was relocated to Boca Raton in Florida and called itself magicJack from then on .
