Philadelphia Independence is a former American women's football - Franchise from Chester , a suburb of Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . The professional team competed in the Women's Professional Soccer in the 2010 and 2011 seasons .

history

The Women's Professional Soccer officially announced the award of a franchise to Philadelphia on March 17, 2009. Two months later, the official team name and club logo were unveiled in front of the Franklin Institute, a museum in downtown Philadelphia. The nickname "Independence" is derived from the United States' Declaration of Independence , which was signed in Philadelphia in 1776 . This is also what the team's motto, "We the people", appears in the foreword of the United States Constitution . Philadelphia Independence is also the official successor to Philadelphia Charge, which played in the Women's United Soccer Association .

In their first season in 2010, the Indepence took third place in the regular season. In the playoffs they made it to the final and only had to admit defeat to FC Gold Pride there. In their second season in 2011, they reached second place in the regular season. In the final, they lost to Western New York Flash .

After the WPS disbanded in 2012, they disbanded.

Philadelphia Independence was part of Team Dynamic, LLC. The managing director was Matthew Driver, who had taken over the management of the franchise. Driver was New England Revolution's first assistant coach and owns three other Delaware Valley women's football clubs in the Women's Premier Soccer League .
