Joseph Osmond Barnard (born August 10, 1816 in Portsmouth - † May 30, 1865 in Grand Port , Mauritius ) was a British engraver and miniature painter who designed the first Mauritius postage stamps, commonly known as the Red and Blue Mauritius .

Life

Barnard came to Mauritius in 1838 and earned his crossing to the then British colony as a stevedore . In the following years he earned his living engraving jewelry, making business cards and painting miniature portraits. Since 1839 he was married to a woman of Dutch descent with whom he had 10 children.

In 1847 he was entrusted with the design and printing of the colony's first postage stamps by Postmaster General James S. Brownrigg. These came to the post office counter on September 21, 1847 and were sold out after a few weeks. Barnard received the order to make new printing plates, each containing 12 stamps of 1 penny and 2 pence per printing plate. He delivered these printing plates on May 2, 1848; the stamps printed with them remained in use until 1859.

Barnard opened a stevedoring company that specialized in loading and unloading merchant ships in Port Louis . From the profits he acquired in 1862 a sugar cane plantation in the south of Mauritius, which he operated until his death.

Honors

On the occasion of his 175th birthday in 1991, the postal administration of Mauritius issued a special postage stamp with a portrait of Osmond and a picture of the Blue Mauritius.
