The National Women's Soccer League in 2016 was the fourth season of the US women's soccer league National Women's Soccer League . The regular season began on April 16 and ended on September 25, 2016. This was followed by a play-off with the four best teams of the season, which played out the NWSL championship in two semi-finals and one final. The defending champion was FC Kansas City , which was able to secure the NWSL title for the second time in a row.

Due to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August , the game took a break between August 1st and 25th, and the end of the season was postponed again compared to previous years.

First place after the regular season and thus winner of the NWSL Shield was for the first time in the history of the franchise of Portland Thorns FC . In addition, the Chicago Red Stars (as in the previous year) and Washington Spirit (as in 2014 and 2015) and, for the first time after the final defeat in 2013, Western New York Flash qualified for the play-offs. The defending champions FC Kansas City finished only sixth and missed the play-offs.

Both semifinals were only decided in extra time; Washington prevailed 2-1 against Chicago, Portland lost its home game against Western New York 3-4. In the final, Washington and Western New York met each other. This was decided for the first time on penalties, in which Western New York was able to secure the title 3-2.

Franchises and venues

The nine preseason franchises took part in the 2016 season; Added to this were the newly founded Orlando Pride as the second expansion of the NWSL field of participants after the Houston Dash, who joined the league in 2014. The Chicago Red Stars moved from the Sports Complex at Benedictine University in Lisle to the much larger Toyota Park for the 2016 season .

Players

Before the season, the so-called player allocation was used to allocate national players from the United States and Canada to the ten participating franchises. For the first time in the history of the NWSL, the Mexican Association did not release any players. In addition, a new mechanism for distributing further potential US national players came into effect for the 2016 season:

National Women's Soccer League 2015 / Player Allocation

This was followed by a so-called draft round, in which the teams were able to sign college players:

National Women's Soccer League 2015 / College Draft

mode

In the regular season, each team played a total of 20 games, ten of which were home and ten away. Each of the 10 teams initially played a home game and an away game against each other; Each team played one additional home and one away game against a local rival.

The four best-placed teams at the end of the season qualified for the play-offs.
