The Maryland Soccer Plex is a sports complex in Germantown , Maryland that opened in 2000 and is operated by the Maryland Soccer Foundation . It comprises a total of 19 grass pitches and three artificial turf pitches as well as a sports hall (Discovery Sports Center) with eight basketball and volleyball fields .
The complex is located in the South Germantown Recreational Park , which also has two mini golf courses , a driving range , an archery range , a public garden, a model boat pond , two BMX courses, a tennis facility and an indoor swimming pool .
The main stadium can accommodate up to 5,126 spectators and has hosted the home games of Washington Spirit from the National Women's Soccer League since 2013 . Previously, the predecessor franchise Washington Freedom from Women's Professional Soccer played its home games here. Since June 15, 2013, the main stadium has been named Maureen Hendricks Field .
history
In 1998, a group of dedicated parents led by Maureen and John Hendricks, the founders of Discovery Communications, set up the Maryland Soccer Foundation (MSF), a not-for-profit organization to build, manage, and operate the future complex. A public-private partnership (PPP) was signed with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission for the construction .
The Maryland SoccerPlex, which initially consisted of 19 grass pitches, was opened in October 2000 and was expanded to include three artificial turf pitches in 2008.
