history
WUSA
The Boston Breakers succeeded the former WUSA team, which also played under the name Boston Breakers from the founding season in 2001 until the WUSA was discontinued for financial reasons in September 2003 in this first professional women's league.
WPS
In their debut season of 2009 , the team finished only 5th and thus missed qualification for the playoffs. The 2010 season went much better for the Breakers. You finished second in the regular season. In the playoffs, however, they were eliminated in the super semifinal. They lost 2-1 to Philadelphia Independence . Also in 2011 the Breakers qualified for the playoffs. They finished fourth in the regular season. In the playoffs, however, they were eliminated in the first round: the Breakers lost 3-1 to MagicJack .
However, the league was disbanded in 2012. Reasons were the lack of teams and a lawsuit from a former team owner. For the 2012 season they were part of the Women's Premier Soccer League Elite , which disbanded after one season. There the team was the best in the regular season, but failed in the playoffs in the semi-finals. The franchise then changes to the new National Women's Soccer League.
NWSL
On November 24th, 2012 the founding of a new women's soccer professional league was announced in the USA. It was also announced that the Boston Breakers team from Boston will participate in the NWSL.
In the first season , the franchise took 5th place and narrowly missed the play-offs of the best four teams after the regular season.
Things went much worse for Boston in the following years: in the 2014 season they finished 8th, in 2015 and 2016 the franchise was by far the bottom of the table in the regular season. In the 2016 season, only three wins in 20 games with only 14 goals scored. Also in the 2017 season , after a good start to the season , the team was only to be found at the bottom of the table and finished ninth and penultimate place with four wins from 24 season games.
Before the 2018 season , the NWSL team was withdrawn from the game for financial reasons after negotiations with an investor had not been brought to a successful conclusion.
