The National Women's Soccer League in 2013 was the first season of the US women's soccer league National Women's Soccer League . The regular season began on April 13 with the game FC Kansas City against Portland Thorns FC and ended on August 18, 2013. This was followed by a play-off with the four best teams of the season, which in two semifinals and a final NWSL championship played. The franchise of the Western New York Flash came first in the regular season , the final of the championship was won by Portland Thorns FC.

Before the start of the season, the 8 participating franchises were assigned a total of 55 internationals from the United States , Canada and Mexico :

In addition, after the college draft, it was possible to sign players without a club (so-called free agents ).

In the regular season, which lasted from April 13 to August 18, each team played a total of 22 games, 11 at home and 11 away. Each team played:

  • four games each (two home and two away games) against three other teams, based on a geographical division of the teams in east and west,
  • two games each (one home and one away game) against two other teams and
  • three games each (two home and one away game as well as one home and two away games) against the remaining two teams.

The four best-placed teams at the end of the season qualified for the play-offs. The semi-finals, in which the first placed fourth and the second placed third, took place on August 24th. The two winners met in the final, which was held on August 31st.

    Honors

    After the end of the regular season, the NWSL awarded awards for the most successful goalscorer, the most valuable player, as well as the best young player, goalkeeper, defender and the best coach. Journalists, club representatives and NWSL players were entitled to vote in the election. All individual awards went to players and the coach of FC Kansas City .

    Lauren Holiday was named both the most successful goalscorer and most valuable player of the season.
