Elma is a small town ( Town ) in Erie County in the US state of New York . According to the Census, it had 11,317 inhabitants in 2010 . The city is named after the American elm .

The city is located in the central part of the county, southeast of Buffalo . Because of its location, the city is also known as the "Heart of Erie County".

history

The area around the city, which was part of the Buffalo Creek Reservation from 1797 to 1826 , was first settled around 1827. The first residents included several members of the Free Church of the Inspired .

In 1857 the city was founded from parts of the small towns of Aurora and Lancaster . It is the last newly founded city in the county. At the foundation of one of the residents suggested they to a large American elm ( Engl. Elm to name), which was located in the urban area.
