Cheektowaga is a city in Erie County in the state of New York in the United States of America . The name is an onomatopoeic transcription of the Iroquois Jei-ik-du-wa-ga, which means something like the place of the wild apple tree ( Malus coronaria (L.) ). In the 19th century his name was still written Chictawauga .

Cheektowaga is the second largest suburb of Buffalo after Amherst and is partly home to Buffalo Niagara International Airport .

history

Before the city was founded, the area first belonged to the Neuters, then to the Seneca Iroquois. From the middle of the 18th century it was a hunting and fishing ground for six different nations. After the War of Independence, the vanquished settled here at the expense of the former Buffalo Creek Reservation . Many immigrants settled here. Appollos Hitchcock built the first log cabin in the area of today's old town in 1808.

The city was founded on March 20, 1839 and reduced to its present size on October 16, 1851. The area originally used for agriculture developed during the upswing of the 1950s. Companies like Westinghouse Electric settled here. It became a typical working class area. But this upswing is over. Today Walden Galleria is the largest shopping center in the area from Niagara to Buffalo with 150,000 m² of retail space .
