East Aurora is an American town with 6,236 inhabitants in Erie County southeast of Buffalo , New York State.

history

East Aurora was founded in 1804. The later 13th President of the United States, Millard Fillmore , lived there with his wife Abigail from 1826 to 1830. His former home, which he built there as a lawyer at the beginning of his political career, is now administered by the Aurora Historical Society. The house has been restored to the style of the time and features furnishings and other items from Fillmore's presidential era.

The place is also significant through Elbert Hubbard , the writer and founder of the Roycroft movement , who founded the Roycroft Society there in 1895. Artists and craftsmen who came to be known as Roycrofters settled there and had a profound influence on the development of American architecture and design in the early 20th century.

The Roycroft Campus was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District in November 1974 . The Roycraft Campus inn was granted National Historic Landmark status in February 1986 and reopened in June 1995. It can be used for public and private events. The Elbert Hubbard Museum on Oakwood Avenue has a rich collection of book art and other products from the Roycroft workshops.

present

East Aurora is u. a. the headquarters of the American toy manufacturer Fisher-Price . The company was founded in 1930 by Herman Fisher, Irving Price and Helen Schelle. Until 2010 there was a toy museum on the site with exhibits from 1900 to the present day. There is still a factory outlet there.

In 1995 and 1999, East Aurora was among the first communities to successfully oppose the establishment of a Wal-Mart department store. The preservation of the historical cityscape also played a role.
