Red Beat was a British post-punk band that existed from 1979 to 1982.

Band history

Red Beat was founded in High Wycombe in 1979 by the three brothers of the British musician Howard Jones and musically based on the early sound of the befriended band Killing Joke .

In summer 1980, the band moved to London and recorded her first single, which in October on the Malicious Damage - label appeared Killing Joke. Radio DJ John Peel became aware of the band, and Red Beat recorded a session for his radio show on December 2, 1980. This already happened with a new line-up, as Martin Jones and Majid Ahmed had dropped out due to musical differences. Red Beat also fell out with Killing Joke, but founded their own record label Manic Machine Products in 1981 , on which they released two singles until 1982.

Between 1980 and 1982 Red Beat appeared as the opening act for numerous well-known bands, such as B. Killing Joke, U2 and Big Country .

In 1982 Red Beat recorded new songs for Miles Copeland's I.RS Records , but a record deal was never concluded. Towards the end of 1982, the band then broke up.

The three Jones brothers formed a new band called Wheel Of Change , which recorded new songs for Stiff Records in 1983 , but a record deal did not materialize. In 1984 the band name was changed to Red White And Phoenix , they oriented themselves to Germany and released a single "Power Reflex" / "Strangers At Midnight" on Ralph Siegel's Zip label. Despite the fact that the video was shown on November 13, 1984 in the music show Formula One and a photo session was published in Bravo , the single was not a success and the band was finally dissolved in 1985.

Roy and Martin Jones began working with their brother Howard Jones, while Paul Jones became a session musician and in 1998 a drum teacher.

By releasing a Red Beat song on the compilation Wild Dub - Dread Meets Punk Rocker Downtown in 2003, interest in the band awoke again, so that the three singles and the John Peel session in December 2004 as "The Missing Album" published on CD.
