The FC Kansas City was a women's football franchise from Kansas City . It was founded in 2012 and was one of eight founding members of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), the top division in women's football in the United States, in which it played from 2013 to 2017. In November 2017, the franchise was dissolved and the license returned to NWSL, which granted it, including player contracts, draft picks and other rights, to a new franchise, Utah Royals FC .

history

On November 24th, 2012 the founding of a new women's soccer professional league was announced in the USA. It was also announced that a team from Kansas City will be participating. It was later announced that the Kansas City team will be named FC Kansas City. The franchise is nicknamed the Blues .

The franchise was headed by Chris Likens and his two sons Brad and Greg Likens and Brian Budzinski. The Likens family also owns the Missouri Comets team, which play in the Major Indoor Soccer League . On December 12, the former football player and assistant coach of the Comets, Vlatko Andonovski , took over the position of the team's coach.

The first season in the NWSL took place in 2013 . The Blues secured second place at the end of the regular season and thus qualified for the play-offs . There the team was eliminated in the semi-finals. With Lauren Holiday , FC Kansas City has the first top scorer in the league. In addition, Holiday was named Most Valuable Player this season. Erika Tymrak received the “ Rookie of the Year” award and Becky Sauerbrunn was declared the best defender in the league.

A year later , the FCKC reached the playoffs again despite a weak start to the season and won the championship in the NWSL after victories against Portland Thorns FC and Seattle Reign FC .

Also in the 2015 season , third place in the regular season made it into the play-offs. There the team first beat the Chicago Red Stars and met the Seattle Reign FC again in the new edition of last year's final . Kansas also won the second final with a goal from Amy Rodriguez , securing the title again.

The 2016 was less successful. Kansas was to be found throughout the season in the lower third of the table and missed the play-offs for the first time with sixth place after the regular season. At the turn of the year 2016/17, businessman Elam Baer acquired FC Kansas City.

In the following season in 2017 , Kansas City could not qualify for the play-offs. After the first two game days, the team was consistently in the lower half of the table and only finished seventh after the regular season. After the end of the season, the league bought back the game license from the owner Elam Baer, dissolved the franchise and issued the license including player contracts, draft picks and other rights to a newly founded franchise, Utah Royals FC .

Stadion

Kansas City FC played their home games of the 2013 season at the Shawnee Mission District Stadium in Overland Park . For the 2014 season they moved to the smaller, but more centrally located Stanley H. Durwood Stadium . Another advantage mentioned was that the previous stadium was not a pure soccer field, but also had a gridiron mark. Just one year later, another move to the Swope Soccer Village complex in Kansas City took place.
