Orlando Pride is a women's soccer franchise based in Orlando , Florida . It was founded in 2015 and has been participating in the National Women's Soccer League , the highest division in women's football in the United States , since the 2016 season .
history
On October 20, 2015, the first details of the franchise, including the team name and logo, were announced at a press conference broadcast on the Internet. The inclusion of Orlando Pride represents the second expansion of the field of participants of the NWSL, which started playing with the 2013 season . Before the 2014 season , the Houston Dash had joined the league.
Tom Sermanni , previously long-time national coach for Australia and the United States , among others , has been named the first head coach in the history of the franchise.
On October 26, 2015, the franchise announced the signing of internationals Alex Morgan , Kaylyn Kyle and Sarah Hagen .
In the first season Orlando finished 9th after the regular season and thus missed the play-offs of the best four teams. The 2017 season was much more successful: the team reached third place in the table in the regular season and was thus able to qualify for the play-offs. In the end, however, they lost 4-1 to the eventual champions Portland Thorns FC .
The third year of 2018 Orlando finished in seventh place in the regular season and thus again missed the play-offs of the four best teams. At the end of the season, the franchise and head coach Tom Sermanni separated amicably.
Orlando ended the 2019 season with just 4 wins from 24 games in ninth and thus last place in the table.
organization
Orlando Pride is run by the same organization as the men's Orlando City franchise in Major League Soccer . The president is Flávio Augusto da Silva. After Portland Thorns FC and Houston Dash , "sister teams" of the Portland Timbers and Houston Dynamo , the Pride is the third NWSL offshoot of an MLS participant.
