Thomas Dorby Sermanni (born July 1, 1954 in Glasgow , Scotland ) is a former Scottish soccer player and was the coach of the USA women's national team from January 2013 to April 2014 . Before that, he coached the Australian national soccer team for several years, with which he won the 2010 Asian Cup. At the end of October 2018, he became the coach of the New Zealand women's national football team .
Player career
Sermanni played as a midfielder in Scotland, England, Australia and New Zealand for Albion Rovers , Torquay United and Canberra City FC, among others , and came on more than 300 appearances and scored more than 50 goals.
Coaching career
Sermanni coached several professional men's and women's teams in Australia, Japan, Malaysia and the USA. During his engagement for New York Power he coached the US internationals Christie Rampone , Shannon Boxx and Tiffeny Milbrett . From 1994 to 1997 and again from 2004 to 2012 he coached the Australian national soccer team for women. With this he took part in the World Cup tournaments in 1995 , 2007 and 2011 . In 2010 he and his team won the women's Asian soccer championship after finishing second in 2006 and fourth in 2008 . In qualifying for the Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012, he failed in each case to North Korea.
Sermanni coached the US women's national team since January 1, 2013 . On February 9, 2013, he coached the national team for the first time in an international match, which the team won 4-1 against the team of his native Scotland . After the disappointing performance at the Algarve Cup 2014 , in which the team only finished seventh, Sermanni was dismissed in early April 2014. At the 2015 World Cup he worked as an assistant coach for the Canadian national team.
From the 2016 season of the National Women's Soccer League to 2018, Sermanni coached the newly founded Orlando Pride franchise . In 2016 Orlando was penultimate, in 2017 they reached the playoffs in third place, but lost there in the semifinals with 1: 4 against Portland Thorns FC . In 2018 the season ended in third place.
In October 2018, he took over the post of coach of the New Zealand women's national football team . He was able to win the 2018 Oceania Women's Soccer Championship with her and thus qualify for the 2019 World Cup and the 2020 Summer Olympics. Shortly before the World Cup, the New Zealanders were able to win against World Cup favorites England for the first time , but at the World Cup they lost the three group games and were eliminated. Before the World Cup, his contract was extended to the Olympic Games.
