The type VCS 420 was a series ship type, consisting of six identical units. The container ships were built by the Juliana Constructora Gijonesa shipyard in Gijón for the Deutsche Seereederei Rostock (DSR), the state shipping company of the German Democratic Republic .

description

The first ship, the Halberstadt , was launched on November 6, 1985 and was delivered to the client on May 30, 1985.

The ships are designed as double hull multi-purpose dry cargo ships with a deckhouse far aft and three forward cargo holds . The three cargo holds are equipped with cell guides (cell frames for guiding the containers) for 40-foot containers , which can be quickly dismantled to enable the transport of conventional general cargo and bulk cargo. The containerization of the planned shipping areas of the Red Sea and the African coast, which was not yet comprehensive at the time, made such a solution necessary. This type was equipped with two 36-tonne board cranes from the Lübeck manufacturer Orenstein & Koppel . A trimming tank on the starboard side made it possible to compensate for any impact sides when using the on-board cranes , since these cranes are located on the port side. The container capacity was 194  TEU below deck and 246 TEU on deck, whereby the deck capacity was increased to 324 by stowing another container layer. The holds of the ships are closed with hydraulic folding hatch covers.

The ships are powered by a twelve-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine of the type SKL 12 VDS 48/42 AI-2 with an output of 4413 kW. The engine acts via a gearbox on a propeller and a VEB ELMO shaft generator and enables a speed of around 16.0  knots . There are also three SKL auxiliary diesel engines and one Pegaso emergency diesel engine . The berthing and casting off maneuvers are supported by a bow thruster .

Remarks

  • The ships were paid for with a bulk delivery of lignite briquettes from the GDR production.
  • According to the ideas of the politically responsible in the GDR Ministry of Transport, this series of ships was intended to honor anti-fascists or personalities of the German labor movement (letter of February 6, 1984).
  • The then general director of the DSR had some problems with the proposed ship name Neustadt . Throughout Germany there are over twenty places with the name Neustadt . So this ship should at least be called Neustadt / Orla because of the agricultural machinery combine there. He couldn't prevail and so the name stood for all new towns .
