Thomas N. Durkin is an American football coach . From 2014 to 2015, he was in charge of the Boston Breakers franchise in the National Women's Soccer League .
Career
Durkin began his coaching career in 1982 in the football department of Union County College in Cranford , New Jersey . In 1986 he moved to the university team of Rutgers University , the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and worked parallel to this at club level as a coach of the Suburban Soccer Club in New Jersey. After a brief position as head coach of the men's and women's teams at the Richland College of Dallas, Durkin joined the USSF's coaching staff in 1995 and was assistant coach for the United States' male U-17 team .
His appointment as assistant coach for the MLS franchise Tampa Bay Mutiny in 1996 brought Durkin to professional football for the first time. However, he left this again in January 1998 and then worked until 2011 at the IMG Academy in Bradenton , Florida as head coach and sports director.
In August 2013, after the dismissal of the previous head coach Lisa Cole at the Boston Breakers , Durkin was installed together with the former record national player Kristine Lilly as assistant to interim coach Cat Whitehill and moved up to the 2014 season as head coach of the Breakers. After two years in Boston in which the team only finished in the back seats and could not qualify for the play-offs, Durkin resigned as head coach of the Breakers at the end of the 2015 season.
