Vlado Martek

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vlado Martek (* 1951 in Zagreb , Croatia ) is a Croatian artist who deals with the visualization of the written word. In his works he works with poems, sometimes only with their fragments, which he stages with the help of murals, graffiti, prints, drawings, sketches, collages, actions and agitations, graphics and artist books. Vlado Martek currently lives in Zagreb, where, in addition to his artistic work, he has also been working as a librarian since 1979.

life and work

Vlado Martek studied literature and philosophy at the University of Zagreb . Soon Martek was looking for other means of expression besides poetry and went public in 1974. With the photographer Željko Jerman and the then art student Boris Demur, he put up posters for the underpass of a well-known main thoroughfare in Zagreb with large-format pictures. Under this he put one of his poems in large letters in poster format for the first time. A year later he founded the group of six artists (Grupa šestorice autora) with Mladen Stilinović , Sven Stilinović , Fedor Vučemilović , Boris Demur and Željko Jerman . Until 1979, the artists' association held over 20 events in the streets of Zagreb.

Martek's basis is the field of tension fed by philosophy, poetry and visual arts . In his works he negates and constructs the words to visualize reality between the lines. He describes the resulting reduction and concentration of poetry as prepoetry. Here his interests come together from linguistics to psychology to anthropology and anthroposophy . Martek describes it as follows: “Pre-poetry is controlling, an evasion into space before writing, controlling my head, my motives as to why I write, my responsibility, a tidying up before I write a poem. In that sense it is a provacation in language, by destruction but also construction. ”Martek uses a wide range of media and materials to critically, humorously and analytically question and present social structures.
